Rebuild Questions
« on: June 18, 2008, 10:20:03 AM »
Considering a project and need some more help.

1.  Any concerns with the strength and longevity of the original hull?  I know some people add a layer of biaxial to the entire hull...is this a good idea or overkill?  What underlying concern are they really addressing?

2.  Anyone actually sink one of these rigged hulls to see if they would float assumming the voids are filled under deck.  The math indicates a fully rigged 22 will sink.

3.  Any failures post rebuild? New stringers detaching?  Transom failure?

As you can see my questions are trying to help decide between rebuilding an older boat or spending a little more a newer boat.  I plan to keep this for a long time.

First, welcome to the site!

1. There is always a concern with older hulls - Fiberglass has a finite number of stress cycles it can go through before it begins to weaken.  By adding new biax inside, you are adding strength to the hullsides.  Yes, it adds weight, but I feel a lot better knowing I have new glass on the inside.

2.  I do not have feedback on this question - have not left the plug out of my boat before on purpose.  On purpose.

I will say that I would guess most of these types of boats would sink - like a Dorado, etc... but that is speculation.

3.  If a rebuild is done in a shoddy manner, or poor techniques are used, sure these boats will fail.  If you look at the quality of the "rebuild" someone did to Shine's boat before he owned it, you will see what I am talking about.

The biggest question you need to ask is whether you are up to a rebuild... not meaning whether you have the skills, but more so whether you have the patience.  It has been a LONG road for me, and I have wanted to throw my hands in the air MANY times.  Ask my wife how she likes the project.

I'll second Richard's caution about being prepared for the long haul.  I started my rebuild thinking to just replace the sole and get back on the water.  However, in good conscience I had to keep digging and grinding until all the bad stuff was gone.  Now, a year later, its all about putting it back together and customizing.  I doubt I'll be done before the end of summer.

I have enjoyed the work and do not regret anything about it but I would not take on another rebuild.  May someday build one from  scratch though.

MD

I share your concern about hull thickness. I am doing a cosmetic rebuld with the goal of a total rebuld / refit in three years. At that time, I am sure i will add to the current hull. You can count on being out of the water for quite a while, when its time. I still expect, depending on what your "new boat" cost is, a rebuild will be cheaper with a way higher wow factor! CR
