How to remove paint on the deck
« on: May 08, 2008, 05:59:49 PM »
What is the best way to remove paint on non-skid decking.  The previous owner painted some light-blue paint on the deck. It is not very thick and even worn off in some areas.  SO...sand it off?  Paint over it? Use some type of paint remover?  Again..not a thick application, I tried to post pix several times to no avail...sorry and thanks!

Is this the original factory non-skid sole?  If so, sanding the paint off means removing the fiberglass.  Using a paint remover is not a good idea.  I tried some on a console which softened the skin.   :!: Maybe a pressure washer with a turbo head would do the trick  :!:   You said the paint is thin. That tells me there was no primer used so the bond is probably weak.  That way you remove the paint but keep the texture.  If you repaint be sure to prime.

Try a wire brush.  It will remove the paint from the crevices and even enhance the non-slip surface a bit.  You can use a hand-held or a circular one in a drill.

Good luck!

It is not the original paint because I removed the bench seat and under the seat is the original white non-skid.  They definetly did not prime, it's alomost like if you white washed a fence.  The color is there but very thin and lightly coated.  The pressure washing sounds like a good idea, I think I am going to try and use a palm sander with lo-grain paper on a small area.  I'll try and post some pix.  Thanks for the advice!
