Big change
« on: May 07, 2008, 04:51:49 PM »
Well its been great reading everyone else’s posts and seeing the pic’s that are posted on boats, that have been worked on. But now I finally have something to say myself. First a comment. I love the ride of my 1981 222ccp. I bought this boat because I just plain and simply got tired of getting beat to death with boats that had 12 to 14 degrees of dead rise. Now I’ll tell you the truth. I just never liked the look of the ccp. And I have all ways been in love with the, what we always called the standard Aquasport look. I’ve loved that look sense I first saw them. When a friend bought his 17 the first year they hit the market. Yea you read that right. I’m that old, that I saw the first ones being fished and fished from my friends. But now to my question. It has always been my intention to start one inch above the rube rail and take a sawsal and cut the gunnel cap off. And replace it with a cap that looks like the old flatbacks. That would give me the best of both. The ride and the classic look. But not being one to just jump in and start something that could end up more they I bargained for. I thought I would ask here. Has anyone ever done this? Or know of anyone who has? As far as I can see. It’s pretty straightforward. But it never hurts to ask those that have been their and done that. Also this is not the only mod. I’ll be making. I’m also going to close in the transom and lengthen the rod storage area under the gunnel. So I can put nine-foot fly rods under there and keep them out of the way. I will also add. This isn’t  the first boat that I have extensively modified. So glasswork is not new to me.

I think that's a pretty hefty project, but could be AWESOME.  I agree with the "Classic" look...

You might wish to review Shine's project - he built his own cap for his 222 FB.  I think the biggest challenge is probably just making sure it is even on both sides (maybe stating the obvious here).  I have no experience with building a custom cap - sorry I cannot offer more thoughts.

Would this be a recap?

I would not vote for it, because you would lose a good deal of freeboard, and that is another thing that separates the CCP from the others.

But if you want to do it - use a FF (Family Fisherman or Cuddy) hull, not a CCP.   The FF has the same lower section and deep-V, but different top, and can be bought for very little money compared to the CCP.   :!:
Since you will need to change out the floor anyway, the FF hull seems like the way to go - and you will not be trashing a nice sea-going CCP hull.

My $.02...

nice pic. and she is worth a bundle. as for starting with a ff hual. that would give me that 12 to 14 degrees again. Don't want that. I love this 20 degree ride.

As for going to a mako. well I like them and almost bought a 23. But after having a 79 20 footer, which beat me to death. Like I said don't want to go there again. Besides, I love my Aquasports. In fact I'm thinking of buying a 17 footer that is for sale up the road from me. He only wants $3500 for the whole rig and it would be a good boat for the sallow water near me and when I fish by my self in shore. When it comes to running off shore. I want my 222ccp.

As for the free board loss. That isn't really a problem for me, sense I fly fish most of the time. I only run off shore on days that look good.  The closed transom is more inportant, sense I fish a number of rips and most of the boats I have ouned seem to drift stern first. I took water over the transom of my mako all the time. That was another reason for going to the ccp. The water stays in the splash well and doesn't come in to the cockpit.
also I have fish from a few parker SE's and other boats with that same amount of free board and they have done find. But again unless you go to a DV they beat you up.

Now for those that would sujest going to one of them. Have you seen the prices they want for one of them?  The good thing about my 222ccp. I oun her and don't ou anybody anything on her and being retired, I have the time to work on her.

Actually the 222FF and 246FF use the same deep-V, 20 degree deadrise hull as the CCPs.  Some for XFs (Express Fisherman).  The 196FF uses the semi-V hull from the Osprey 196.  The 222 and 246 FF models also have the same gas tank and specs as the CCP models.

I've seen a 222FF redone with an enclosed transom, bracket, etc.  into a nice center console model.  It was similar to what you are talking about - remove the upper cap, put in new deck and new console.  Again, you give up freeboard, but keep the deep-V hull.

Sorry I read FF and right away thought of the flatback. That's a problem with getting old you read to fast. You are right of course. And like I said the free board loss isn't that important to me.  :)

Saltfly....I have a CCP and i dont care for the high cap either.  But I have gotten used to it.  I would prefer a hull like the one on the Southport boats with a big flair forward.

Dont cut up your ccp ---thats a sin!!!!

Thats a sweet Eldorado Biaritz convert.
89 250 CCP
full transom
Twin Merc 150\'s......thirsty?  YES they are.
