'79 170, tank replacment
« on: April 04, 2008, 03:52:41 PM »
My  Dad has just passed on to me his Aquasport.  My kids learned to ski on it, so I am very happy to have it.  It's in great condition, except for the gass tank.  Making a rush job of it last summer (trip to the beach deadline) he replaced the gas tank with an in-hull plastic tank from West.  The replacement tank was put in backwards, so the sending unit is at the front (stalls during acceleration with 1/2 tank), and the fill was relocated to under the console front seat.  I want to fix it right, back to the origin fill tube in the gunnel and a properly installed tank, (aluminum?).  Is that hard to do?  How do I find a "retro-fit" or custom tank?  The average full service boat yard?  Suggestions on where to start would be helpful.  I'm in Grand Rapids Michigan.

Pretty easy think to do - look for posts by Gonefission here in projects.  I would use aluminum, yes - and you can have a tank manufactured for between $7-10 per gallon.  Typically you send them dimensions, they send you a tank.  Post up pictures as you go!

Congrats on your new boat.
