title problem

bought 246 xf off of craigslist/tampa last year got title only to find out newer title is out there  what can i do? original owner said tuff :*:  so no help from him because he sold boat 2 years ago  any help would be great   thanks johnny

Go take the purchase price out of his ass, the press charges for selling a boat that was not his.  You are probably out of luck on actual money.

Call the police and file a report. I bet he will try and help you then.
You may be able to trace the title by the hull registration number. Here in Jersey they usually do not change and can be traced back.

If boat was stolen its out of ur ass if you report it to police. Look online to try and find a title to a similar length boat. I know there are some companies that sell titles to for 18' boats, 20' boats, etc. they just sell the titles off of scrap boats and then get rid of them. Might be an option.

There are free boats all over the place, look for one with similar length and snatch it up, instant title.

Its been a long time since I took business law but if a buyer purchases personal property "in good faith" then the buyer is not liable and keeps title.  The seller on the other hand can be in deep trouble for trafficing stolen goods.

Can you track down the person who holds the current title? I don't know about Florida but in Texas boat titles were no big deal until sometime in the 80's.  Perhaps the boat was sold without title, the seller applied for a new title then never transfered it to the buyer.  Maybe the guy that sold you the boat gave you a "voided" title and is just too lazy to look for the current one.  He can be compelled endorse the current title to you if his name is on it and you have the Bill of Sale.
