Can You ID This Engine
« on: January 27, 2008, 04:39:32 PM »
I have a Yamaha V6, 2.6 Liter Micro Computer Ignition System engine on my Aquasport Express Fisherman with the following 2 lines on the ID Plate:

YAMAHA 220AETO
6G7UL700121

Can anyone tell me for sure which year and which type of engine this is.  It has been variously identified by people who should know as a 1986, 1985, a 1984, a V6 Special , a 220 HP, a 225 HP, and etc. etc.

I know that several sites provide keys to these numbers, but so far I cannot identify the engine using those keys.  I think it is a 220 HP, but what in the world, if anything, do the AETO, the G and UL indicate?  I have been able to determine that 700121 is the serial number.

I would like to make a positive ID before the engine requires service or parts.  Right now, at 300 hours, it is running very well, but that won't last forever!

Thanks for the help.

Couple questions:
Have you take these numbers to a Yamaha dealer?  If they can't tell you, no one can.
Or at the least, go to the Yamaha site and plug the numbers in.

Your Questions/Any Scandanavian Language Readers Out There?
« Reply #2 on: January 27, 2008, 08:33:55 PM »
Rick,

Thanks for the questions.
Question 1:  No, I have not contacted a Yamaha dealer in my area.

Question 2:  I have tried Yamaha's official site.  No luck.

I did find a site that is in a Scandanavia language.  The link, for those facing a similar problem as me is:

http://www.marinshopen.se/guide/yamguide.htm

Although I can't really read the site here is what I determined from it by picking out what an English speaker can make of it based on similarity between the language on the site and English:

A=Engine generation (MOTORGENERATION Från A och framåt)
    or perhaps this means fuel type, e.g. gas or gas/oil mix?)
E=Electric start (Elstart)
T=Power Trim/Tilt (Elhydraulisk trim & tilt)
O=Oil injection (Autolube Multipoint Oljeinsprutningssystem)
6G7=1983-1985
220=HP  (ANTAL HÄSTKRAFTER)

I will try calling some dealers this week, but I have generally found that in this area dealers tend to be resellers of new equipment and do limited service, repairs, and parts.  If anyone knows of a dealer I can call anywhere in the country who can identify the motor, please let me know.

Thank you,
RGB

Yamaha will be able to tell you when the engine was manufactured by the serial number.  However, that may not be the engine year, as some engines produced late in the year get the following year's model number.  No big deal - just the way it is.  Yamaha built a 2.6 litre 220 HP V-6 outboard in the 80s.  I think it was produced in versions from 150 to 220 (special) HP and was replaced by the 3.1 litre that is currently rated for 225 and 250 HP.  The racing version of the 2.6 was slightly destroked and competed with the Mercurys in the F1 competition at 2.5 litres - at 325 HP!!  So you could build that thing to fly if you wanted.    :twisted:

AETO (or something like it) represents the model type and some options.  I am more familiar with OMC and Mercs, but I believe all Yammies are As, the E stands for electric start, the T indicates electric trim and tilt, and the O is oil injection.  If it also had a X at the end it would be the long leg (25 inch) model.  Yours should be a standard (20 inch) length.

I would guess the date you cited - 83 to 85 - would be about right.  Parts go by serial number, not date, so you've got what you need if you want to order something.   :wink:

Hope this helps!

Here is our local Yamaha dealer http://www.sarabaymarina.com - ask for parts.  There is a fella in parts that was a Yamaha mechanic for many years and has been a lot of help to me when I had questions.

So, did you get the answers from the dealer?  What did you find out?

Called the Dealer In Fl
« Reply #8 on: January 30, 2008, 09:06:56 PM »
I did call the Florida deal you gave me the site for Rick.  After making a call themselves to another source, they said the engine is probably an 84/85 and is commonly known as a V6 Special.  They also made the same point Cap'n John made, namely that ordering parts for the engine is based on the serial number and that an exact model number and year are not as significant as the serial number.

Thanks again for the input.
