I was just wondering about putting a bigger motor on my boat. The boat is a 74 17 foot aquasport cc. It has an 82 90 hp evinrude now and I would like to put a 97 115evinrude on it. Does everyone think that would be ok. Also have a 175 that I would love to put on it but Im sure that its to big and heavy. I would appreciate the advice.RC :)

I had a 1986 17' with a Johnson 115hp. Ran great but....
in light of the cost of fuel these days a 90hp may be a better route in the long run.
The 115 ran its best when I had four grown (overgrown really) men aboard. That's when the extra ponies come into play.

Is there any real difference in the weight of the two engines? I don't kow about fuel economy but you don't want to change the balance of the boat too much.

Typically the 90 and 115 are the same block with some carb work to make it a 115 - so not usually any weight difference between the two from the same manufacturer. Your motor's years are very different though which could change the weight but I wouldn't think that it would be that big of a problem. You'll gain a few mph with the 115.

RC
Look back to my post last year. After much debate I put a 70 hp 4S Suzuki on my 87 17ft Sport. It replaced a 115 hp 1983 Merc.
I love the performance and economy for fishing, not sure if you are looking to do watersports.
