Repowering 1980 family fisherman
« on: January 02, 2008, 04:19:45 PM »
What's up guys.
I have a 1980 22'2 family fisherman cuddy cabin. Currently has the 470 merc. motor. Decided to put a outboard on it. What size motor should i check into? Forgot to mention it's a heavy boat. Also what manufactor do you reccomend?

                      Thanks, ED

A V-6 with 200-225 HP is about right for that boat.  4 stroke versus 2 stroke and HPDI versus others depends on the depth of your pockets.

This is also a good time of year to look for a low-hour used or rebuilt outboard - people tend to repower during the winter and you can sometimes pick up a deal!

Here's a link to eBay you may want to save:

Good luck!

I think Bubba is on target.  I did a USCG power calculation on my 22-2 CC.  It rated well over 250 HP.  With your I/O and forward cabin the weight of a 250 should be no problem.

Keep in mind also that the 1980 222 Family Fisherman outboard model was rated for a maximum 245 HP.  A 250 on a bracket would probably not be an issue with the insurance company, but a 275 or 300 could be a problem - just depends on how they rate it...

I have a 225 opti on my 246 wac, plenty of power and great fuel economy. Had Almars in De. hang the motor, NO SALES TAX in De. Use the boat off of LBI.

Hi Bubba,
I have the original '91 250 Yamaha on my 230 and it has enough power for it but is not real thrifty on fuel economy. At 30mph she burns about 16-17gph depending on sea conditions and how far I can trim it out.  "Better than a sharp stick in the eye", but not like some mileage you hear from others here.
She's a great boat without a doubt though  :D
