strakes , skeg , 22-2 flatback

Does anyone have info on putting stakes/skegs on the back bottom area of a flatback 22-2 to prevent a spinout?? I want to do this and I was thinking about 2 strakes about 12" off the transom and 12" off the sides the strakes would be about 32-36" long and about 2" deep.??

I have seen the keel extended back... and seen people add lifting strakes at the bow... but I do not know about adding strakes to the rear.  My thought is this though- strakes are normally meant to lift, and this boat already needs bow lift to ride correctly... so adding sternlift may be counter productive.

I'm gonna do that on my boat. I'll have two keels on the quarter lines on the bottom of the boat near the transom. They do it on all the flat bottom mullet skiffs around here to prevent spin-out when over turning.

Somebody have an image?

Frankly I get nervous when thinking about changing hull designs much - I do not design boats for a living and am not inclined to second guess a design that has obviously worked for 30+ years.  Not trying to discourage you from whatever you plan on, just my $0.02.

Strakes will give no lift to a flat bottom boat. Lift strakes have a flat bottom that return up into the deadrise of a v bottom boat to give lift from its flat surface. A v bottom boat is less efficient than a flat bottom so they add flat strakes to v bottoms to give lift. If you want to add strakes on the flat back they would be more like 1"x1" keels placed across bottom of boat. I would think 3 down the middle would help. One long and two flanking 1/3 shorter than the long.

I'm not a boat designer either. I'm only 20, but i've been around boat building since birth. My dad has build 4 boats from scratch, and rebuild probably 15-20 for friends. Another guy used to build boats out of our shop. I'm not building this boat to sell or for anyone but me and i want it to work for what i plan to use it for. I have a keel mold that should work. All the small keels on the quarter lines will do is keep the boat tracking straight, and let it run a bigger motor without spinning out.

Hey - like I said, not trying to discourage anyone.  There's a lot of guys out there with knowledge far superior to mine... that's why I would not attempt it myself.

strakes / keels

I guess I should have called them keels, not strakes. I need them for stability and to prevent spinout. I was not wanting lift. Thanks for the input.
