Short shaft to long shaft

Anyone know if you can change a long shaft lower unit from a 1978 175 hp Mercury O.B. to a 1988 short shaft Mariner 175 hp?

If both are 2.4 or 2.5 litre engine, yes.  Should be a direct bolt-on.  3.0 litre engines have different lower units.
