Ok, I think I'm ready
« on: November 27, 2007, 06:44:12 PM »
Hi guys, as you can see I'm new here, actually not really. Tried to post about 2 months ago about my new acquisition. Took me about an hour  to get pictures ready and write  a beautiful description  of my first ever boat :)   . Until ! I did the unthinkable    I closed the wrong window of firefox    I couldn't believe it  :x .  I got traumatized big time   I was new to firefox and was just getting used to it, it was the first time a thing like this ever happen to me, and since English is not my native language  was even more frustrating . Tried a few times since then but was to paranoid and not quite ready

Feel better now , baby step, baby step

Thanks Rick

I had been looking for a boat since last year, didn't  know exactly what to look for, until I saw her listed on ebay in July, it clicked , that's the kind of boat I wanted, a boat that looked like a real fishing boat. My wife thought I was crazy wanting a boat that was in that kind of shape but it didn't matter, my mind was set. She thought I was even more crazy when she found out the boat was in NY, a seven hour drive  . I didn't mind about the drive, I used to do that for a living and a friend of mine was joining the ride.

To be contined

I was a bit nervous on the drive down, kept thinking, what if this, what if that, seven hours of thinking of worst case scenarios, my wife telling me over and over, I told you so

Of course we manage to get lost in NY  was an hour late meeting with John the owner of the boat, a very nice guy, we drove down to the marina to see her. For some reason I couldn't think strait, I was like hypnotize, just staring at her,  good thing my friend was there, I just wanted to pick her up and get the hell out of there, afraid that the owner would change is  mind, even if the boat would of had a two foot hole in the hull, she was coming back home with me. So we end up spending about two hours there, getting the papers ready, gave me a almost new swimming pool, a mini motorcyle ( end up giving those to my friend)John had the motor running on muffs , was running a bit rough but I didn’t care, I was in love :)

Looks like she REALLY needs some love.  You have your work cut out, that's for sure.

If you trailered it 7 hours on that trailer you got solid steel testicles, recognize!!!

Best of luck to you and welcome aboard you're where you need to be...

Not too shabby depending on the deal you made.   8)
All she needs is a little bleach and some hull cleaner and she'll look a lot better. THEN you can see what she needs, attention wise.
Trailer doesn't too bad, 170s are very light.  I'm sure you checked it out before you started the trip.  Probably want to go through it though.
So, how does it feel now? Proud owner of one of the best boats, especially in that era. IMHO

(BTW, instead of typing the code to post pix, just click on the buttons or copy the UBBCode from the site you're storing your pix on.)

Welcome to another future Aqua-holic!  You've got a classic Aquasport 170, so you've found the right place.  Lots of 170 folks here - feel free to ask any question and I bet someone can answer it!

See ya on the water!

I just got my '72 170 about two weeks before you.  Fortunatly for me I just had to haul it home from my neighbors.  The classic custom 170 is the saltiest, fishiest small boat I've ever seen.  It was love at first sight for me too. Now if I can get my wife to feel the same as I do we can be happy together... the three of us.  I put some pics in my gallery.  Mine also needs some TLC.  A new windshield and console seat mainly.  I think there was a flip down seat in front of the console in '72 also.
I am interested in restoring my \"new\" `72 Aquasport 170

Thanks guys and sorry for the late reply

WHAT NOT TO DO WHEN TRAILERING

So I got all the papers and the only thing left is hooking up the trailer and go. But there's a problem, the lights on the trailer don't work  :( wires all corroded :(  try to find a place in NY to get some but we're approaching rushing hour and we decide to hit the highway and stop somewhere  out of the city.

As we were getting out I noticed that the trailer was making a lot of noise (squeeke sound), I mean a LOT of noise and every once in a while it felt like I was applying the brakes on the trailer but I had no brakes on the trailer  :?  I felt very uncomfortable, stress was building up,  my friend was sleeping so he was not much help and I wasn't sure if it was normal or not. Once on the highway it felt better .

Once out of the city I stop in a rest area to see if everything was good, felt the wheel bearing to see if they were hot, check to see if all the stuff in the boat was still there, everything seemed fine.

So I hit the road again, still thinking about where to stop to find some trailer lights. Every time I would stop to gas up I would do the same check and the more I looked at the boat, the more I was thinking my wife is going to kill me, it seemed that reality just hit me, the boat was plain ugly, what kind of stuff was I smoking !!   I was actually thinking about unhooking the trailer and inventing a stolen boat scenario

It's starting to get late and still no trailer lights, now I had no choice then to stop somewhere, can't be that stupid  . So we finally  stop in Albany NY , found a auto part store, it was almost dark, got the new lights on. Now I was starting to feel better and safer, the boat looked better too

I was way behind schedule, since I was supposed to leave on vacation to Nova Scotia the next day at 4am for a 14 hour drive . The good thing about it is that my wife wouldn't see the boat in day light

Finally we arrived at the Canadian border a 1am, went inside to declare the boat, they didn't believe the price I paid for the boat until they went out to inspect it, no problem they said after, it looked more like a dump truck then a boat

So my plan was to drive home, unhook the trailer, load the Edge and leave on vacation before day light, which we did and come back from vacation at night time, so she wouldn't have a clear picture of the boat

I was looking at your pictures, I thing that what I'm going to do with  the bow railing , since I'm missing half of it, looks good too and not to much in the way for the type of fishing I do
