Prop blades - is mo' bedda?
« on: November 13, 2007, 09:26:14 AM »
Got a new birthday prop and tried it out over the weekend.  Went with a 5 blade Mercury/Quicksilver High Five in 19 pitch.  Compared to my old 3 blade Mercury/Quicksilver Power 2 stainless in 19 pitch, here are the results:

Hole shot = very good with 5 blade, smooth too.
Top speed = 40 with 3 blade at 5300RPM, 44 with 5 blade at 5500RPM
Efficiency = 3 blade was 10 gal/hr at 30 MPH, 5 blade is 8.9 gal/hr at 30 MPH.

So it looks like the new 5 blade High Five is a winner on my boat!  The 5 blade prop has a diameter almost 1" smaller than the 3 blade it replaced, so that probably allows more trim before cavitation.  Note that all the above specs are with the motor trimmed for optimum efficiency.   I will run a full RPM/Speed/Mileage set later and post the full chart.  But for now, I'm a happy camper!   :D   I guess mo' is bedda!

Here's a picture (prop porn):

Verrrrry interesting.  I have no experience with 5 blade setups... interested to see if everyone has seen similar results.  Good stuff.

High 5 price
« Reply #6 on: November 13, 2007, 07:29:15 PM »
List price on the High Five is about $550

They are going on eBay for $250 - $350; that's where I got mine.

At $3.00 per gallon for gas, it will pay for itself in about 80 hours of use.  Lots cheaper than a new engine!

John,

I am looking to re-prop mine.  Are you interested in selling your old prop?  Is it stainless steel?

I'm running a four blade ss "Renegade" on my 200 Rude. It performs much better (and allows proper rpm range operation) than the three blade alum or stainless wheels. Anyone else running one on their Johnson (that doesn't sound right)/Evinrude.

I don't put anything on my Johnson

I have a 4 blade Predator with open vent holes on my 225 OceanRunner.  I do not remember the diameter or pitch.  It gives me a decent hole shot and hits 5900/40 mph at WOT.  Fuel consumption we are not going to talk about

I also found a prop on Craigslist in Texas.

I know that some will but I am not sure about all.

Ken can answer any prop question you have.

Yamaha V-6 outboards use the same prop shaft setup as Mercury V-6 outboards and Mercury Alpha outdrives. The propellers are interchangeable, but I think the thrust washers are different.  Of course, if you're just changing the prop, you would use the old thrust washer anyway...

Hope this helps!!
