Newbie to the site - CCP Questions

I’ve been poking around on the site for a couple of weeks now, looks like a ton of dedicated Aquasport folks here.  Very encouraging.

What brought me to this site is that I’m a previous Aquasport owner (1987 175Osprey) who is looking into purchasing another one.  I live in Michigan and currently own a 1997 24’Thompson Fisherman Hardtop.  We fish primarily on lake Huron and Saginaw Bay for Walleye.  Love the boat, no problem there.  I am also an avid duck hunter who is looking to buy a good tender boat for layout shooting.  The first boat that came to mind was Aquasport.

It looks like there is a diverse group of owners/operators here and I’m looking for some information and advise.  Here goes……………..

For layout hunting I need as much deck area as possible.  My 170 had a raise front floor which is fine for fighting fish and so on....... but its not desirable for decoy storage (IMO).  I have seen photos of Aquasport models that do not have a raised front deck.  From what I could tell the CCP models appear to have a flat front floor.  Is this true?  Are there other CC models that are like this as well?  I’m looking in the 20-22ft range, maybe this configuration is on larger models only?  And from the pics I've seen there seems to be a larger longer above deck storage locker on the CCP's.  Is this standard for the CCP or was it an option or what?

Also, I cannot seem to find specs on a mid 80’s 20 or 22 CCP.  Does anyone know the beam on these?  How much water does the hull draw?

One last thing………up here in Michigan neglect and/or salt water is not an issue, its neglect and/or water freezing that causes damage.  I’ve been looking online for a mid 80’s CC and there appears o be some decent deals out there on boats coming off the SE coast and Florida.  What kind of issues should I look for with a Salt Water boat from these areas?

Any help with these questions would be great.

My 22-2 CCP has huge front deck space.  It is flat all the way to the bow.

I don't know if the "coffin" box was standard or an option.  Mine had one and I took it out for even more front deck room.  



Mine is a '78 and the beam is just about 8'.  Maybe some of the AQ flyers in the Photo Gallery will give you the info you are looking for.  I think a few on here have contacted Genmar and received info on some of the boats.

With the motor trimmed up I would guess 14" draft on mine.

About the only extra issue with salt water besides the obvious motor corrosion would be the wiring.  My factory wiring was still in pretty good shape.  The wiring the previous owner did was all useless because he made no attempt at waterproofing connections.  The running lights worked intermittently but were corroded enough inside that I just replaced them rather than fight them.

I will not attempt to address all the other issues of older Aquasports.  There is plenty of info on here in the "rebuild" threads about stringers, foam, transom, fuel tanks, etc.

The 80s CCPs had the following specs:

Note:  All had flat floors from spashwell to anchor locker.

Beam:  246: 8'0" - 222: 8'0" - 200: 7' 10"
Draft: 246: 12" - 222: 10" - 200: 12"

All are deep-V hulls, with a  20 degree deadrise.

Are you allowed to hunt with a boat that big?
Salt? It definetly takes it toll. EVERYTHING corrodes, I mean everything.
    I live on a barrier island near Atlantic City, New Jersey. The salt atmosphere takes it toll.
    AS far as salt vs. boat: Check wiring. As long as the motor is not in the water and is flushed with fresh water after each use you should be okay. Water pumps wear out a little quicker but you should be on top of that already.
    We use CRC spray oil on all metal, cleats etc.  You will know if it is a "rust bucket" or not.

Do you still have the box? Is that section on front a "cooler" and does it drain back into the fish box?

No, I do not have it anymore.  It did have about 2" of some kind of foam that was turning into dust but it was sealed in fiberglass so it still basically did it's job but not that great.  I do not remember how the front section drained.  The rear section was set up as a fish box and had a 1.5" drain to a thru-hull in the side.  I do not know if that was original or not.  The box was very heavy.  I replaced it with 2 162qt Igloo Marine coolers with cushions that I can put in and take out as I please.  I used a router and dug out recesses in the deck, coated them with epoxy and paint, then mounted wide SS "footman's loops" that I can hook a rachet tie-down strap and hold them in place but when they are out, there is nothing to trip over.

The fish box drain is factory. I have the same setup on mine. I'm missing the front "cooler/storage" section though. I mounted a 54qt. cooler in its place to achieve the effect. While I have used the fish box for dolphin fishing in S. Florida, since coming to Tallahassee I find I use the box for dry storage. My wife likes riding on it. A rather heavy "couch".

My wife had a cheap outdoor chaise lounge cushion from Wal-Mart.  It suited her, but not me.

In 22 and 24 foot CCPs with the coffin, the front box is insulated, but drains from the bottom of the box onto the deck.  The big fish box in back drains through the deck to an overboard drain.  It would not be a big deal to have the front box connect with the hose for the back box drain.  

Note that 20 foot CCPs have a smaller coffin.

Is it just a fish box or does it contain a cooler section also? My coffin is a fish box only.

Negative.
It does not have the "front" cooler section. I find no indication that it was ever placed in my boat. I have a one piece fish box only.

You may have the one from a 200CCP.  I don't think it had the front compartment.

Thanks for the inputs guys.  I'm going to keep my eyes peeled for a 20' CCP.  There was/is one on Craigslist in Florida but I've left 2 messages with the guy and so far no return.  I'm assuimng it sold.
