HELP!!! I'm debating...Sell or Not to Sell!?!?!?
« on: November 06, 2007, 09:49:26 PM »
Alright...I know this is like asking a cattle farmer whether he prefers chicken or beef? However, I am looking to ya'll for advise.

So I bought this Proline 20 the other day because it basically fell into my lap. I have begin to tear it down and I kept thinking. I was really looking for an Aquasport 222 or even a Proline 24. The more I think about it the more and more I wonder if the Proline 20 is the right boat for me.

Please keep in mind I plan on doing a full tower, full transom, port-a-bracket, center console with front cooler seat, etc. Will I have enough room with the Proline 20, or do I really need the AS 222 or PL 24? Is there that much difference in space and room?

All of your advise would be greatly appreciated. I don't want to put all this time and effort into something that I will regret doing later on. What do ya'll think? Should I keep the Proline 20 and rebult it, or should I sell it and purchaswe ann AS 222 or PL 24? Thanks in advance.

PS...If anyone has any photos of Classic Proline 20's being rebuilt, please post them, as I cannot find many at all. Thanks!

Junk or not, a hull is a hull after everything is removed from the inside.  Bear, this would give you a chance to learn how to replace the stringers, transom and floor and if at that point you still want a bigger boat, then sell it at that point and let someone else take it from there.  A lot of people don't have the skill set necessary to do this and want a boat that they can add to but not do the "hard stuff".  It won't cost THAT much to replace those items and, depending on what needs to be done, is not that hard to do.  Look at the experience you'll be gaining and now be able to put towards the boat you really want.
Don't look at it as a way to make money but as a way to experiment and learn.

Don't forget to consider your intended usage.  You have to target your project for that or you will not be happy.

Is a 20' really big enough for a tower?

How many people will be in it?  I had an '02 19'6" Key West and it got crowded with 3 people.

I can promise that a 22' will ride better in a chop and a 24' even better.  If I had ever named that Key West it would have been "Hard 'n Wet" because that's how it rode in a Tampa Bay chop.  I am amazed at how good the 22-2 CCP rides (with trim tabs) and it's a dry ride.  A couple of my friends have 24' Grady-Whites and they are jealous of my ride.

Great question and i had the same debait when i was starting. i went with the 222 aquasport because there is actually a complety restored 20 proline in sarasota that i look at on craigs list and when i went and saw the boat with the tower and the raised front deck it was too small and that was with a half tower. just standing on the tower the boat was obviously shorter in length but the beam also seemed much narrower. Just being on the tower threw the center of gravity and the boat was really rocky from side to side. but this is just my opinion

I'm not real familiar with the prolines. Is that boat a flatback, if not what are the years that are?

Yes, I believe it is a flatback. I've made up my mind. I'm selling the boat.

I can only pass along hearsay, but from what I have been told the 24' Proline is basically an exact copy of the early 222 - but two feet longer.  I have heard mixed reviews on the construction of the hull... but have not "dug into one" myself, so I do not have a point of view.

Depending on what you want to spend, a buddy of mine has got and 87' 222 for sale as his 24 proline was just completed. So he is taking off alomsteverything from the AS and puting on the proline. The AS is good hull, brand new transom 12/06, but needs new floor now. I think the tower is staying with the boat and he looking to get around $6k for boat w/o trailer but one is available.
