Just bought a 1967 flatback in Montauk on Sunday. Got it registered today and now the fun begins. To think this 22 footer was bulit while I was serving in Nam with the 1st Marines. Is it possible that it can be older than some of you "good guys out there"? I plan on using it for the rest of the season since the strippers will start their run as soon as the weather turns. Looking forward to bring her up to snuff.

From reading many of your comments, offers of help, and sound advise I want to thank you in advance for your help during this restoration once I get it started.

Gentlemen, thank you for your return posts and positve comments. Keith, I will not repower at this time. The 90HP on her now is a 1990 or 91 and still runs very good. I do have a friend who went into this venture with me and we feel that it would be best to get to know the boat.

The boat is 40 years old and I know from reading some of the posts, I will have to replace the deck at some time in the next year or so. I will need your advice and experience to get me through that phase. There was just something about the lines on the FB that got me excited and I just had to buy her. I have been told that I can repower with up to 200hp.

Again thank you for your support.

P.S. Wish I were 40 and know what I know now!

I have a newbie question, hope you guys don't mind.  Why is it called a "Flatback"?  Also, from another thread, what does it mean to say the fuel tank is "in the coffin"?  'Spose I'll never learn if I don't ask. :?:

flat back is in reference to the deadrise (angle of the "V" in the hull at the stern).  A "Flatback" is just that, no deadrise or V.  Runs shallow, rides rough.

Under the deck, the tank is boxed in with a wood/fiberglass box resembling a coffin.

Mine is NOT a flatback. I'm sure there are some flatback pics in the Photo Gallery.
