Boat Trailer
« on: September 23, 2007, 11:37:52 AM »
Since the purchase of my '87 Osprey 200, I have been on the lookout for a used trailer in good condition.
I have had no luck.  So now I am looking for a new trailer, I am sure you guys have plenty of suggestions.
First, What size trailer do you suggest I need? Length, width, trailer type.

I do want tandem axle.  I am willing to drive to pick up.

My boat is sound, and getting better all the time as I make upgrades, but right now the trailer is preventing me from going where I want to go.
I live in Lafayette, LA, I can easily fish the TX, LA, and MS coast... if only I had a trailer.

These have the absolutely best reputation around here but I have no experience with them.  They are probably the most $$ also.

I will try to discourage you from buying a ShoreLand’r trailer.
http://www.shorelandr.com/

I had a new '02 ShoreLand’r "ALUMINUM" trailer with a Key West 1900.  The trailer frame was solid and looked good.  Almost ALL of the bolts, accessories, and hardware were cadmium plated.  The crossmembers were galvanized.  Mixing three different metals and saltwater caused major corrosion everywhere two dissimilar metals touched.  I had to start replacing bolts before two years were up and the aluminum frame was pitted severely where the galvanized steel crossmembers were bolted to the aluminum frame with cadmium plated steel bolts.  The light wiring totally sucked.  Everything was connected with those little blue pinch-on splices that cut into the wires.  I started having bad connections after three launches and both light sockets were corroded beyond use at 6 months. /end Soapbox

Thans JJ.
I have time to make my decision, so I am looking for as much information as possible.
When I bought the boat, I knew the trailer was crap, but I wanted the boat, not the trailer.
Tell me, is the 200 Osprey a V-bottom, or a semi-V?
Thanks
Keith

Look up Champion Trailers in Slidell LA. I don't know how close that is to Lafayette? I have bought stainless u-bolts and such from them. They make aluminum I-beam trailers with galvanized axles. I don't have their trailer but they looked good on the web site and in their catalog.

I've got a used "Float On" that my 222 CCP used to live on. I added a bracket to my boat so it's now a 25', the trailer was marginally to small and with the work needed I just decided to get a larger one. The trailer needs some axle work. It has a tandem torsion axle. It could be repaired or replaced. It's an Aluminum frame. Tires are in great shape. No brakes but it tows good. It was designed for a 20-23 footer. I was thinking about having the axles worked on or going to Champion in Slidel, La and getting a new spring axle set up. I'm in Mississippi.

Beware the lolipop of mediocrity, lick it once and you will suck forever!

They look real good, just was hoping not spend 3500.00 on a trailer, but I might have to, so I appreciate the info.

O.K.  Guys speak now or forever hold your peace...
I believe I am going to let FASTLOADER build me a new trailer.

They have a 4200lb GVW single axle all aluminum with torsion springs that I believe will fit the bill.

Their price and delivery are within the budget.

Lets hear those Pros/Cons

If you have the budget, I agree with JJ - go with the RollsAxle - guaranteed for life.  I put one of their axles under my 170 and when the time comes, I'll replace the 2 axles under my 230 with theirs too.

Send him a PM.  I know he would like to sell it.  It just was not the trailer for me.
