Rub Rail Cleaning
« on: September 18, 2007, 09:19:43 AM »
My 84 CCP's rub rail is still in good shape but has blackened over the years (orginal color was blue). I've tried bleach, rubbing compound and even a wire brush. The original color will reveal itself best via the brush but that leaves a scratched rail. Has anyone dealt with this issue or is the concensus just to replace the rail? Any magic potions out there?
Thanks in advance

Theres a product that the car repair guys use on plastic bumpers, don't remember what it's called but it takes out scratches by just barely melting the plastic while you wipe it on.  Sounds more severe than it really is, and it works really good on the car plastic.  You should definitely try it in an inconspicuous area first as they say.
I've used carburetor cleaner on my black rubrail to take out white marks and small scratches from the trailer guides/docks, works pretty good and probably does the same thing as the above product.  It will remove wax from your hull so be careful, I spray it on a rag then wipe down the rubrail.  Also tried Brake Cleaner but that doesn't work at all.

A friend of mine used a mix of acetone and Armor All to restore the dark blue on his Grady.  I'm not suggesting this but he said it worked just fine.

You might want to try whitewall cleaner. I have used that before and it worked well.

Check out "Island Girl Products". They're kind of expensive but GREAT products. I think, the one in particular for what you are looking for would be the "Island Girl Pink" or the "Island Girl Elixir." The rest of the products they have are awesome too and work fantastic. I bought one of the kits.

Check them out here: http://www.islandgirlproducts.com/island3.html#pink
