My old 170 sank in the Carolina Beach, NC Harbour

I sold my 170 last September to a guy here in N.C.  I received 4 calls within 1 hour today from Coast Guard, Police, informing me that my vessel has sunk in the harbour at Carolina Beach and I needed to make arragements to get her out of the harbour :?  

Come to find out that the guy who bought my 170 never registered it and I am still listed as the owner.  I found out that the 170 was tied on to a 60' yact and it sank in the harbour taking the 170 with it :cry:   That still makes me sad considering all the work that I put into her such as re-built motor, new gas tank, wiring.  To make matters worse, the 60' yact has had a major oil spill as a result of the sinking.  I guess my old 170 has been laid to rest :cry:

What a waste!  

Hope you saved your paperwork to prove the boat isn't yours.
Maybe she'll show up again in the rebuilds forum.

Just an idle question, but did she float full of water or was she on the bottom?

Yup, hate to hear that.  
I remember trading my old '63 Scout 4x4, that I'd put a ton of sweat equity/$ into restoring, to a guy for a motorcycle back when I was getting out of the Army (the Army would ship the bike back to FL for me).  The next weekend he came over to tell me he'd rolled it climbing some terrain and that it was a basket case.  So I know the feeling.
Wonder if that is a common thing - to not register a boat?

According to what I was told, she was resting on the bottom.  I guess the weight of the 60' yact pulled her down as well.

I did fax the Police, Coast Guard the bill of sale from when I sold her.  It is just a real shame because I don't think you could find a 1988 170 in as good as shape as the one I had.

Any idea what happened to it after they raised it?  If it wasn't registered it wasn't insured.  Maybe a free boat for someone who wants a 170 to work on.

From what I have been told, she was underwater for about 10 hours.  I assume it was lifted out yesterday sometime.  Between the oil spill and the saltwater, no telling what she looks like :cry:

I'm going to be down there the week of the 17th.  If you like, I could check it out - maybe the boat is OK and you could claim the salvage.  Can you buy some time with the USCG or local folks?   :?:

The motor is probably shot, but the rest of the boat may be OK.  Fiberglass is pretty tough stuff!

I doubt that I could claim the boat since the other guy owns it.  NC wildlife still has the boat registered to me.  I would like to know what he plans to do with it.  Right before I sold it the motor had just been re-built and it had a brand new tank.  I guess both are toast.

I plan to find out where the boat is being stored as soon as I can.  I should have just bit the bullet and kept the 170 along with my CCP.  I hated to see all my hard work ruined :evil:

I will let you know where it is being stored when I find out.

If the boat sank relatively peacefully and they didn't make a hash of it raising her, she's likely in good shape.  Electronics will be gone but the motor will probably be fine if somebody can get at it before the salt goes to work on it.  Fuel tank won't be affected by the sinking.  Will just need a good cleaning out.  The key to the whole project is getting to it A.S.A.P.

Just found out the 170 is still under water :shock:   That makes about 36 hours submerged.  They have contacted the guy who bought it from me.  That was his 60' yact that sunk as well.  No one knows what caused the 60 footer to sink.  That guy just lost tons of money :shock:

Anything in the newspaper about it?  Big boat like that going down is just the sort of thing a paper would jump on.

I live a good ways away from Carolina Beach.  I would assume that it would be in their local newspaper.  They are still not sure what caused the 60' yact to sink.

Is this it?  From the Wilmington, NC paper:  

Three rescued after sailboat sinks

Three men were rescued by the Coast Guard Monday night after their 65-foot sailboat had engine problems in Masonboro Inlet, hit a jetty and sank.

Wrightsville Beach Coast Guard spokesman Danny Jancauskas said a distress call was received from the boat shortly before 10 p.m. that indicated the men were abandoning the boat. The Coast Guard dispatched a 25-foot vessel to rescue the trio from the rocks of the northside jetty, where they swam after the accident, he said.

The Coast Guard did not identify the men on board the vessel.

Pieces of debris from the boat were washing ashore Tuesday morning as divers from Towboat U.S. inspected the sunken vessel in preparation for an attempt to raise it today or Thursday, a company spokesman said.

A caller to the Star-News identified himself as the boat's skipper, Dwayne Bartlett, 40, of Southport. He said the three left Southport on Monday heading up the coast toward Georgetown, Md. When the vessel reached the edge of the Gulf Stream, it developed engine problems and turned back to shore, he said.

Heavy seas coupled with the engine trouble made the boat unmanageable, and the vessel was unable to avoid hitting the jetty, he said.

Bartlett said the boat's first mate suffered a dislocated shoulder, but the others had only "assorted bumps and bruises."

Where the new rod holders on her? The kids will be really upset if their craftsmanship is sitting at the bottom.
