LED All-around Light
« on: July 09, 2007, 05:43:15 AM »
After a long hunt for this type of light to save energy while boat camping, I found and purchased this light at a local "chain" store.

The installation went smooth - I was able to slightly modify the 1.5" hole from the existing Perko incandescent all-around and the base that holds the voltage regulator and stuff fit perfect.  The holes didn't line up, perko uses 3 screws and this base uses 2 (that's why I modified the hole, so I could use 1 of the 3 existing holes).  I then connected the red and black wire and this base installation was complete.  The only thing left was to find a place to mount the included storage mounts, which I put up under the gunnel between the rod-rack uprights - out of the way.
Time to test it.  The light's connector slides effortlessly into the base and then locks with a twist of the collar.  I turned the switch on and the top lit up brightly but was small, in comparison to the normal incandescent I was accustomed to. A great feature is the old "car antenna" approach they used in the design - starts at a manageble 2 feet and extends to 6ft - a good foot above my biminis.
The next day I headed out camping, used the light and was impressed with the operation and brightness.  This light does not give you any light in the cockpit like some of the all-arounds we're used to - it's all at the top, and it's high enough that it doesn't hurt your night vision.  I walked about a 1/2 mile down the shore and looked back several times to see how it worked and it was easily the brightest light in the area and it's whiteness easily stood out in a background of incandescent shoreline "light clutter".
Great light.

Update: Downloaded the pics so they couldn't "move".  They are still proud of this light - $80.00. The rubber cover on the base didn't last long but the light's still kick-butt.  Stays stored under the gunnel until it's needed.  Haven't had a problem with it since I bought it  :thumright:

I bought an LED all around light, a 12" flip-up type that I mounted to the top of my Ttop, from Bass Pro for about $45. Made by Attwood.

Nope, see above. The motorized version is sweet but you know how long motors last in a marine environment     Requires quite a bit of room under the gunnel too.
