222 CCP Ship Island, Mississippi

Headed to the coast this weekend for a trip to the Islands. My brother was headed out as well in his HydoSport 25 WA. The trip to the Pass was relatively uneventful except for my fill up. I got to my brothers and had gas in the bilge. Upon further investigation I found a split hose on the overflow and a dirtdobbers nest at the hull fitting. I hate those things. Drained off some fuel and washed it out good. All was well.
Took the AS and family to Long Beach Harbor for some sun and fun. About 10:30 we put in and headed to Ship Island. Out of the harbor we were met with a 1' chop with the seas growing the further out we got. About 3/4 of the way there it was 2'-3' with winds out of the north. The AS's ride was great and very dry. 25mph was comfortable for all aboard (wife, daughter, son and myself) We got there and anchored on the southwest tip. Beautiful day, as it got later the gulf calmed down with a light breeze and nothing but sunshine. About five boats when we got there. As the day progressed there were about 20 or so boats. Typical laid back in the sun kind of day, good for the soul. The trip back was easy with light rollers and no chop. 35-40mph cruise was easy turning between 3.5 and 4k with the 200efi Merc. In all a great day. I do still have some concerns about my motor height on the new bracket. In the 3' stuff I was getting a lot of spray from the cavitation plate. not as much in the calmer water. Got a few pics for those interested.
The trip back

A good day all around... that's what it's all about!
Maybe with that split in the hose it'd be good idea to inspect all the hose. E10 will destroy old hose causing splits & leaks.

Nice.
I have not been to Ship Island since I was about 14 but it was a great place then.

Lookin' good - how far out was this island?
With the bracket set-back, it looks like it sits a little heavier in the back but not too bad.
So, what is your ride impression now after the enclosure vs before? Does the ride feel much different?

It's still a great place. After Katrina, the sound seems cleaner as far as the mud and silt. the water is clear and greenish/blue again on the barrier islands. Ship island is about 12 miles off shore.
The CCP rides 2" higher with the bracket than it did prior to the change, but the old transom was wet and I suspect rode lower as a result. I had just gotten the boat last year and only had the occasion to take it out a few times prior to the change so I never really got to know the boat much in it's before state. But the difference is unmistakably improved. It now has a big boat feel with small boat maneuverability. Rough water ride is much better and the extra space is a vast improvement. I guess the full transom/bracket is some what deceptive just to looking at it but the bottom corners on the stern are almost out of the water at rest.

Did you get to try the Johnson washdown kit you bought? How was the pressure?

Rick the pump is a 5.5gph and has great water pressure. The kids keep spraying each other with it. Spray from the nozzle that came with it is good for 10'-15' with good volume. I split out of the pump with a tee and a ball valve and use it to fill my live well also.

Hey Badger,
How fast does your 222 go with that 200hp Merc?
Do you like that size? wish it was bigger or smaller (150hp maybe)?
I've got a '73 CCP 222 that I'm trying to decide on a motor for.
I don't think I want anything bigger than a 200 due to weight & gph.
Recently been thinking about 150hp just because of gph.
Any thoughts.....

Prior to the bracket I could squeeze 47mph out of her trimmed. After the bracket I can get 54mph with a full tank my son and no gear. Cruises good at 40mph 3.8-4K with a 19 pitch Vengeance prop. I would recommend a 225 opti for max fuel economy.

Did you mount the bracket for 20" or 25" shaft?

Mike- you want a 25" shaft. 20" shaft puts the powerhead too close to the waterline IMO.
However I thought you had a 222, not a CCP. I was convinced in 73 there were no CCPs, but I will wait for an "authority" like Jim to comment... ???
FYI, a CCP has significantly more deadrise than a "regular" 222. Once the CCP came out I think they referred to the old school 222 as a "Sandpiper". Point of this rambling is that 200hp on a 222 is way more power versus hull design than a 200 on a CCP, because a CCP takes more power to push the hull with increased deadrise.

Yea, the classic add from the 70's that Jim put up once only called it a 22-2 and refered to it as open fisherman style with a modified V.
I was really just assuming it was a Center Console Professional. Maybe that style name came later for a similiar open fisherman form?
You are right though, the CCP's have a 19deg rise while the '73 22-2 are about 12deg rise.
With a bracket, trim tabs and smaller rise, she should jump out of the water with less hp.
Maybe I will look into 150's instead of 200's. Thanks.

A 175 is also an option... just look at the weight of the motor. For example, an 150 and 175 Merc share the same blocks- 2.5L. So they are pretty much identical, just slightly more HP. Step up to a 200, the block is bigger, as is the weight. Suzuki's 150 and 175 are also the same block. Just something to think about...

Mike, you have the forward casting deck, so it isn't a CCP. The sides aren't as high as a CCP either.
You can see the differences here:
Your boat:
Side by side comparison:
When JJ picked you and the Missus up at the dock, you remember that safe feeling caused by the high gunnels of JJ's boat? You can see the depth of the inside of JJ's boat vs Tim's. JJ's is a CCP and Tim's is what turned into an Osprey.
The later boats, 90's+, combined these two features and have forward casting deck with high sides AND an enclosed transom.

I want a casting deck. :(
It's a bear to throw a cast net from in there. I'm too damn old to balance on the bow of a rocking boat and throw a 15 lb. cast net.
