Lastly, how to do cylinder preasure?
« on: April 16, 2007, 09:40:06 AM »
Before we put her to bed last November I put on the rabbit ears and did engine preasure tests. I pulled all the plugs, grounded them to the block, the engine was cold. My wife ran the starter. All the cylinders were empty except for the one with the preasure gauge screwed in. The throttle was in neutral. The propeller was off. I got 80 psi on all cylinders. It is a 1989 Johnson looper VRO. It ran great all summer and into the fall and started easy, didn't smoke, and never hesitated except when we got E-10 on the Cape in August.  She fired up yesterday and was angry when I told there were still some small ice rafts in the Penobscot. I have heard loopers show low preasure. They were all dead on 80. Any suggestions?   Gary

I was told by a marine surveyor that the looper JohnnyRudes run much lower compression than most outboards and that my 225 Johnson with all cylinders in the 80's was just fine.

John,
I am having a new water-pump put in and will do the same with the VRO. Our Penobscot flows into the bay and we reach brakish then salt water south of here at 8 miles +/-. I always do flush out of salt water. Coming home we run through much cleaner fresh water. Atlantic salmon run here.  Any thoughts on flushing her out? Gary

In that case I would be more concerned with getting the salt off of the outside of the metal.

I am a little familar with your area.  I come up once per year or so to do some service work at the power plant in Veazie.

John,
Are you ever here May to November. Suzy is the best cook, really, we are not talking meatloaf here! We'd love to bend your ear. You set the rules. But really, it would save you from Motel 6 and the "Spaghetti garden" or any other high salt eatery. By the way if you are not here then call anyway, I was thinking you could school us onboard the Sally-Carol since we are major "Gilligan's".   Gary

Gary, It just depends on the customer.  Sometimes it's scheduled maintenance and I get a months notice, sometimes it's an emergency trouble callout.
I found a good place for lobster rolls, don't remember the name, little wooden shack on the road that runs right along the river.  I guess it would be in Brewer.

Whenever I get up there, I'll surely let you know.

Veazie is on the Bangor side where you go to the plant. The Shack though may be the Eagles Nest, literally hanging over the Penobscot. Anyhow, remember you'll have a better than 782 gear bivouac here. Meaning, you'll do quite well. Thanks, Gary

John, Suzy just checked it out and if it is near a RR trestle than you are still in Bangor and it is McGlaughlin's.  It is not to far from Paul Bunyan or Bass Park with the trotter track.  Gary

Eagles Nest!  That's it.  It was just as cold inside as it was outside but good food and friendly people.

What about alligators, poisonous snakes and spiders.
« Reply #11 on: April 18, 2007, 03:07:22 PM »
Of the 48 states, only Maine does not have poisonous snakes. They, the snakes are incredible navigators and never cross over from New Hampshire. Yet we still have ice rafts in the river. But the sun has recently returned.
