I've been out 20 miles in the atlantic in my old 18 footer.but only in the summer when seas were 2-3 or less.Make sure your radio is in good order, and carry a handheld as a backup.Dont depend on your GPS make sure you keep a compass heading back to the inlet,Watch your fuel, one third out,one third to get back and one third in reserve.Use your GPS to plan your day,go to your furthest spot first and work your way back to your inlet.Remember if you are coming back against the wind and seas it will use more fuel.My 18 footer only had a 30 gal tank, you learn to keep an eye on your fuel gauge.Pick your day if its to rough stay inside, not worth it just to get beat up by rough seas.IMHO 8)
