Did the 2X4's stick to the boat due to squeeze out around the holes?

I cover them with plastic sheeting, stapled around the 2X4 so it will release easy.

As to the 4in U channel. It can be cut. Not a problem.

I installed a large opening in the drop down panel from the transom cap. this allow's the piece of U channel to be installed and or removed if needed, but the main goal is to be able to get in there and work.

You know your going to need to work in there. Why would anyone put small hatchs in and make life hard where YOU are designing it?












Before you paint that piece of alum U channel. Drill 3/16in holes every 6in on both flanges that stick out from the inner transom surface. This will come in handy in mounting wiring bundles with Tie Wraps.

If you look close you will see the custom brackets that were welded to the U channel to mount the 2 Racors and the Bennitt trim tab pump.
A little more work, but makes life much easier.

Jim, I will be using West 407 for fairing.

Bobby, Yep that 2x4 was stuck on really really good, LOL.  I'm putting a 9x15 hatch in the floor for the bilge access and a 9x23 hatch in the rear panel for access to the tab pump, fuel filter and wash down pump. Thanks for the tip of drilling the channel. In your pictures what is the Power-Pak for?

Fly-by-Wire controls.  Those are the servo box's that actually have the cables to the motor connected to. The Factory controls have adapters on them and just have wiring plugged into them.

It's $ expensive!

The day has to be coming when outboards will accept fly-by-wire control directly... or has it arrived already?  Not surprised boxes converting fly-by-wire to mechanical are expensive.

Isn't that what the Mercury DTS system is?  I think the servos are built into the motor from the factory, thus no control box like Wart's.  I may be incorrect though... any Merc mechanics out there?

Well the new bracket was picked up in Waveland the other day. It was in the raw aluminum state so I primed with Interlux 533 and then put a coat of epoxy primer over that to protect it until I get all my holes drilled in the transom. At that point I will put the finish coat on just prior to mounting. The transom is still  a couple of fairing coats and sanding away from painting. I still need to lay in a couple of more layers of glass in the inside corners and the stringers for my own piece of mind. Three layers of 1708 on the inside and six on the exterior to bring it near flush for fairing. After fairing I will roll on a thin coat of straight epoxy to seal it before priming and finishing. I got my new piece of deck cut and glassed for what will be the underside or bilge side. All of my deck hatches are in as is my new Marlon 3/4" intake for the wash down and livewell. I also got a new bilge pump and switch in (Rule 1500). I will mount those after the new deck piece goes in and the bilge is painted. More to come.....

The 1x2's will come out after I glass the front side of the panel. I will be gaining a little over a foot of deck space.

Got the bracket located on the transom today, Now to pull it off and prime and paint (little glass work left though).



"Fester" the cat had to get into the pic.


I am going to cut the channel into three pieces in case I ever need to remove it. It cleared my PVC cockpit drains by 1/2" on the inside and the bracket on the outside by 1" to allow for my ping pong ball scuppers.



Can't decide where to pull the control cable hose out of the transom, center or offset to starboard.

Faired and primed




The dark spot was a pin hole that I filled with a second coat of epoxy primer. I also got the bilge primed. The top cap is going to get a nice new piece of red oak stained and varnished. That light is getting brighter.

Nice progress :!:   By the way, we have the exact same cooler seat :)   I had thought about raising mine off the deck some but the console is too tall anyway to sit and drive.  

That will be a good looking setup when you are finished :wink:
