The trailer that came with my 230 didn't have breaks at all    So how'd the guy get away with that   .... and the trailer is rated at 5900 lbs :!:  :!:
I'm just real careful when I tow right now and when the axles rust out in a few years I'll replace them with the Rolls Axle brand with brakes - guaranteed for life (like the one I put under the 170).  I priced what it would cost to replace the axles with ones that have the flange for brakes on them from Continental and it was crazy.  About 2/3 of what a new trailer costs. Hopefully there are no cops on this site

Slim:

For Louisiana, you are not required to have trailer brakes unless the gross weight exceeds 3,000 lbs.  I am a believer in trailer brakes for any trailer over 2,000 lbs., but usually a good set of brakes on one axle will work pretty well.

However, the law in most states says that once you get over the weight limit, all axles must have working brakes.  So if you have a tandem axle trailer, you usually will need brakes on both axles to meet the law.
