Possible 22-2 ancestor

Just picked up this brochure for the 1955 Scop 22.  Have seen a reference or two about this being a distant ancestor to the first AS 22-2's.  No way of knowing if this is fact or fiction but thought some in the group might find it interesting.






There was a picture of the Sportsman posted a while ago but this is the whole brochure for the line.

Look at the numbers on the bow - the Scop Sportsman pictured is IO B 2824 - the same boat that was supposedly the first center console in the early 50s!  That's pretty cool!    

The story goes that they were building a Scop cruiser and during decking dropped a big drill in the center of the deck.  The drill went right through the deck, so they moved the console and controls to the center to cover the hole.  The "new" boat design was so popular that Scop offered it for sale as the "Sportsman."  People liked the walkaround design and it was very popular as a tender.  Supposedly, Coburn liked it and had Scop build the first Aquasports from wood based on the Scop design in 1957/58.  Here's the other photo of the same boat:

It is supposedly THE MAN!  Kinda like those early Aquasport articles where Coburn showed off the boat himself...  

I understand Scop's still around - Y'all probably see him once in a while up there in the NE.  Next time give him a big thank you for what he started way back when...

Performance of the Scope

Great performance with a 60 hp.  I wonder what my 19-6 would do with a 60-70 hp.  I know a lot of you guys love speed, but 75% of my time is spent at 3500 rpm and I rarely run wide open.  Any thoughts?

I'm with you Sturgeon!  Forty knots in a 20' boat is too fast for me.  Also have in the back of my mind the mess hitting a log would make of the lower unit or shaft/strut/prop/rudder.

 From the appearance of that Scop, I'd guess she's just barely hanging on to the plane.  But that's the way it was back then.  They were just as happy at fifteen knots as most of the crowd today is at forty.  In my view of things, the slower the boat goes, the longer you're on the boat, sipping a beer and generally enjoying life.

Hello all - first post from me in a long time, but I've been lurking.   The first Aquasport built by Coburn was a cast off a wooden boat, but the wooden boat was not built or designed by Coburn (at least that's what I was told by Sargeant's son).

Steved... your back!  Thought we lost you to the Mako crowd or something.  When you spoke w/ Sargeant's son did he give you much info. on the old days?  Does he have any the old designs from his dad?

Hope all's well.  Did you get another boat?  As I recall you were re-wiring your AS.

Hey JimCT - I am SO glad you picked up that 22 inboard.  If I had been in the US, you would have had stiff competition.  I really didn't get all that much out of Sargeant's son - it was a nice conversation but it was his older brother who actually had more to do with the boats at that time, and I never did manage to get to him.

I sold the 22-2 CCP in the fall - it was time to let someone else take over the tinkering - and I just saw my old motor off the boat being worked on (problems with the trim) so I think I got out just in time.

In the end, I bought a new semi-cabin 24-foot boat by an Italian company called Mano Marine, with a Mercruiser I/O - nothing at all like an Aquasport center console.  It was delivered last week and goes in the water next week. We'll see...

Yeah, that's the one.  The accessory in the cabin was beyond my budget though.  I'm hoping that I can slow her down with a sea anchor enough for live bait trolling.   I have an 8 hp yamaha that I plan to have along anyway for security. Fit and finish in this boat is nothing like the old Aquasports, but it will be comfortable for the family and having a new injection motor will be a dream after the old 1982 carbed 200 hp Mariner.

Pretty fancy rig... any way to hang the Yamaha with the swim platform back there?  Does the platform fold up against the transom?  When you have the opportunity, post some pictures of the new boat.

Jim,  I could definitely hang the kicker off the swim platform (which is fixed - does not fold up).  There is even a rotating motor mount that would let me pull it up and lay it on the platform without actually taking it off the mount.  BUT ... it would eat up most of the platform and I would also have issues about where to put the gas tank for the kicker.  What I am really hoping against hope (because I don't think there is a way) is that I can find some way to have the kicker aboard only as an emergency motor and to store it inside the main motor locker.  The way the boat is set up standard is with the motor in the middle, the fresh water tank on one side and the batteries on the other (the gas tank is under the center deck).  What I am thinking about (probably a dumb idea to think about modifications to a boat that is not even wet yet) is whether I could move the batteries to the wall of the motor well nearest the center deck, thereby leaving enough space to store the motor opposite the water tank (would balance out the weight).  That way, the motor would be out of the way but there if I needed it.  Pix in a week.
