Hello New here and need some info
« on: February 26, 2007, 06:05:08 PM »
Hello everyone I just purchased a 1979 20 ccp and have to put in a new steering cable. Now this is my first boat ever so bear with me.Where can I find some info on the year and make for references on where things are and how to replace/repair  them.

For instance My steering cable snapped some where but how do I figure out how long the replacement has to be so I can order it now and on the first warm day can start at it.

The Boat was a fresh water boat until a few years ago and was well maintained the outboard is a 1996 Mercury 200hp offshore 2 stroke outboard and was also a fresh water ski boat moter.

Seeing as this is my first boat I am excited like a small child. I am already iching to buy parts and other things for boat so any info would be great.

Welcome!

CCP's are great boats... There's been a rash of "new" ones picked up by other members recently.

One of the best ways to start the discussion of your steering cable problem is to post some pictures of what you've got, maybe some shots of the steering box inside the console.  While you've got the camera out, get some shots of the boat itself.  Always nice to see how different rigs are set up.

Very nice rig!  Definitely a serious fishing set-up.

Seller said he'd replace the cable.  If he doesn't have time maybe he can set you up with the info. on the cable needed & how to replace it.

You in the Clinton area?

Links are fine.  Just have to keep them G rated.

That boat has a huge "following" - looks like she's ready to go too :!:
Welcome aboard SC and glad to see the boat will be put to good use instead of out to pasture.

Replacing a steering cable should be pretty easy (I've done it on mine).  I took the old one out and measured it to determine the length of the new one.  Then it's just a matter of running the cable (my boat has a piece of deck you can remove to expose the channel where all the wires/cables are run) and attaching it at both ends with a bolt/nut.  I think I had to take the steering wheel off to get good access to the helm but I don't remember for sure.

I've heard great things about the Teleflex "no feedback" steering.  I just got the cheapest Teleflex and kinda wish I'd gotten the no feedback one.

Welcome!  That is a sweet looking rig  I just purchased a 1981 200 CCP as well.  Love those cushions on the coffin box.  I need to get some made myself.  The only thing that I would check first off would be the condition of the gas tank.  Did the previous owner tell you if it has been replaced yet?  The main reason that I pulled my tank was the hatch that covers the gas tank was soft and it needed to be re-cored.  That is when I found water in the tank tub and a bad tank

Since we have the same boat minus 2 years feel free to ask me any questions that you wish.  I am in the process of fixing mine up.  If you want to see it check out the thread that says "refurbish 1981 200 CCP" under rebuilds.

That is a great looking boat :!:

The steering cable is no big deal to replace, just take your time it sometimes can be a hassle to get that big cable to go where you want it to.I would suggest that you go to a dealer and check out the different types of steering. Teleflex, teleflex no feeback and my personal fav hydraulic. If its in your budget  hydraulic is the way to go.Its basicly like the difference between reg and power steering.By the way ...nice boat!Good luck with her.  :D

I thought Syten hydraulic steering was standard equipment on CCPs in the late 70s, but yours looks like a Teleflex cable-type wheel - I don't see a filler cap for oil on the helm module.  Learn sumthin' new every day...

You will need a cable - I think either 16 or 18 feet will work, but look on the cable and it will have the numbers.  The easiest way to replace the cable is to disconnect both ends - from the helm and the engine, and then connect the back of the new one to the front of the old one under the console and have someone feed it through the deck hole while you pull from the transom.  The steering cables are normally NOT tie-wrapped to wires on Aquasports, so you can usually just pull it right through.

If the ends won't literally connect together, try some adapting or just go with the universal tool - duct tape the ends together and pull.  I've done this before and it's amazing how much pull you can put on duct tape.  As Carl Zwanzig said "Duct tape is like the force. It has a light side, a dark side, and it holds the universe together...."  It will probably work for you as well.

My favorite two duct tape stories:
1.  Astronauts on Apollo 13 used duct tape to help put together air scrubbers to keep themselves alive.
2.  In April 2000, a man named Gemini Wink was hiking through the swamps near Tampa, Florida, looking to take pictures of alligators. As night fell, he realized he was lost, and decided to climb a tree to avoid being eaten. But he was afraid of falling asleep and dropping into the gator-filled water, so he duct taped himself to a branch. The night passed safely and he was found by sheriff's deputies the following morning.

See ya on the water!

Ditto of what they said about the cable - the cable will be easy - did it on mine, the 170. A problem I had was that the motor end of the cable was about as long as the space between the sleeve and the side of the boat    so it was tough to get out and in.  The console end can be a little confusing to get apart when you can't see it too.  I have the fuel tank under my console so it leaves very little maneuvering room for the cable. The cable ends are stiff and thats what makes it tough to deal with.
Ditto on the hydraulic - had the steering I had on the 170 (Teleflex) replaced with hydraulic and wished I'd done it 15 years earlier - have the same on the 230 too 8)

By us not wanting the cable done we saved 800 dollars on the sale and seeing as I work for boaters world the parts are a little cheaper. After talking with the owner he said I would have to hoist the engine up and a few inches away from the transom to install the cable.Luckily my father has an engine hoist at his house for me to use.

Thanks for all the info guys apearently he has concerns about the trailer have to find a way to tow from clinton to stratford this shouldd be fun.

Check out the trailer tires and wheel bearings before you move it.  Make sure the tires are inflated to the pressure marked on the sidewalls.  Be a good idea to bring your grease gun to give the bearings a couple of shots of grease before braving I95.  Better yet, you may want to go Route 1 so you can keep the speed down and be able to stop periodically to keep an eye on things.  Also be sure you have a ball that'll fit the trailer hitch.  Dumb things like that can stop the parade.

Don't fear - I towed my CCP from Deleware to North Carolina 8)   You can imagine how D.C. was hooked up to a boat    It was a long trip but like JimCt said check the trailer over real well and you should be fine.

Well new tires is what I will be getting this week anyway his are old truck tires and the rimms are rusted through. He says its a yard trailer and he couldn't get it registered in CT.Its a 1979 ezloader steel trailer there are rust spots on the frame but still nothing rusted threw that we saw and tested.

Has anyone ever had a boat with trailer picked up by a marina and had the complete package delivered to thier homes was wondering what it would cost.

I might have just the trailer for you if you're looking for something in better shape.  It's an EZ Loader 32 roller with new rollers & new drum brakes on both axles.  Picture of it before I rebuilt it:

As you can see, it's too small for my 240...

I've been using it as my yard trailer but when I install the I/O in the boat (850 lbs.) it will be surplus.  PM me if you're interested.
