Average life on polyester gas tank
« on: January 25, 2025, 07:11:50 PM »
I have a2005 osprey 175 that I want to repower .My mechanic told me to get rid of the boat because if the poly gas tank leaks,it’ll cost thousands to fix since the tank is completely sealed. What is the average lifespan of the tank?

Poly will usually long outlast aluminum. Biggest think with poly I have seen is the sending unit thread inserts getting corroded out. I personally haven’t seen one leak from the tank itself, they don’t get rot holes in them. Usually a leak is the sending unit, the filler oring or possibly the vent itself. I have a 1990 Hydra-Sports that has the original poly tank and it is bone dry.

I don't see how a poly tank would rot or break down from UV light under the floor.  Your sending unit will go and have to be replaced or maybe the molded in nut but that it.  What did the mechanic suggest it be replaced with?

My tank in my 2001 215 is still good.
