Tach Rebuild?
« on: December 28, 2024, 01:43:03 PM »
The tachometer on my 2001 215 DC is wonky, 200hp Johnson is the motor.  It doesn't read correctly all the time and when you tap on t it moves around a lot.

Any suggestions on a place to rebuild it?  I'm in New Jersey.

Or maybe I should try to find something new?

I doubt you'll find a place to fix it. Might want to go to the teleflex site and see what they offer service-wise and look at new.

Dometic bought Seastar which bought Teleflex and I don't see any gauges on their site.

Yeah, Dometic bought everything in the RV world to. Check Worst Marine, they probably stock them.

I finally pulled the tachometer out and have a few questions.
  • a 4” tachometer doesn’t necessarily fit in a 4” hole?
  • I can use any systems check tachometer with 8 pins if that’s what I have?
  • not looking for the most expensive but is Faria ok?

Yup, I found out the same thing during my rebuild - a 2" gauge doesn't fit in a 2" hole - the same for a 4" gauge - needs a little bigger hole.

This gauge was so tight in the opening that I thought I was going to crack the cover plate.

A standard size tach uses a 3-3/8” hole.
You can use any brand “system check” tachometer.
Faria are ok. I’ve seen many go bad over the years where the 4 lights work but the tach doesn’t read.

I’m not sure of what brand I have but it’s surely not original because it is a different color than the other gauges.  It’s a tight fit in there though and kind of works till you bounce around or tap it and it’s all over the place.
