1997 175 rebuild
« on: May 18, 2023, 03:01:37 PM »
Hi! I’m Jayson. Just bought a ‘97 175 w/ the 90hp Johnson. Upon further inspection, I found out there is a ton of water in the hull and all the foam is saturated. My boat guy said he can fix it for around $3000. Can someone please tell me about how much it will cost (and maybe some pointers) if I do it myself? Also, all the wiring in the helm is messed up. Are there any diagrams for rewiring. I have a starting battery, a house battery, and a trolling motor battery. Thank you for any feedback!

Like the saying, a picture says a thousand words. Its hard to put a price on a job that you've never seen. Boat work scope tends to grow the further you get into it. And once your deep into it, sometimes it makes sense to just do it right so you don't have to do it again. Assuming he is doing it right, that price seems too good to be true. But then again, if the stringers are saturated, you might have a bad transom and haven't seen signs. Most of the time, the work might be done and then you have to paint and finish it. You also have to derig and run all the wires again, etc etc. You see where i am going? I would be sure WHAT he is pricing on paper so its clear and there are no surprises at time of pickup/payment (if you go this route).

I agree we need pics. If you want to post a pic when you talk about your boat, which you should, follow the instructions here http://classicaquasport.com/smf/index.php?topic=12725.0  - don't attach them - you are limited by file size and guessing what size to make the file will usually reduce the pic too much. Uploading them into your "member gallery" is better for viewing and the system takes whatever size you upload and resizes it to the best size.
Spend a few minutes to absorb the instructions. It's really easy. Remember if using a phone to take pics, to hold the phone horizontal with the lens to the left.

My problem is that I haven't cut open the deck to see how extensive the damage is. All I can see (through the access holes)is that the foam is saturated. I've decided to do the work myself. Is there a good book or step by step tutorial on what to do?

I just read that you can cut the deck, replace the wood, remove the old foam, glass everything back in, then cut one inch holes in the deck and just pour the foam in to seal everything and make it so the foam reaches the ply to help with deck rigidity. Is this true?

Sorry Jaysen, I missed your last post.  Hope you kept moving forward. I think I would use a skil saw and cut around the perimeter of the floor, which leaves around 2" everywhere.  Then you can lift that out and get a good look at the stringers and fuel tank.
If the stringers need to be rebuilt it's easy to do this while the floor's out and there are plenty of examples of people that did their floor the same way.
I don't think I would do it the way you spoke about.  No control that way.
