Boot for Aft Trough Leadout
« on: March 22, 2023, 10:42:14 AM »
Hello all.  Happy Spring!

I'm trying to tighten up the self-bailing cockpit on my 1975 19-6.  The aft leadout of the cable trough is nothing but an oval hole in the sole.  I'm pretty certain the trough doesn't drain into the bilge, but it collects water and debris.  So I'd like to seal it up (and tidy things up) with a boot of some sort.

The former owner used a plastic roof vent flashing flange, which was actually . . . not bad.  Especially because the bundle of hydraulic steering lines, battery cables, fuel line, etc, is pretty big, rigid, and wants to lay near the deck.  I envision a split boot, but most products are designed for leadouts on vertical hull surfaces (which I briefly considered doing, but restrained myself).  I'd prefer something that can be installed and removed without disconnecting the whole bundle, but I can do that if makes sense.  Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Would an outboard rigging tube setup be big enough?
Also, and not to promote using house const. material on a boat, there are flexible conduits up to 2" diameter available that don't have metal in them.

If your trough is anything like the trough in my 170 was, it ran from the console to the back of the boat and across the bottom of the transom with the drain plugs in the trough. The trough cover on mine did have an oval notch where the trough turns to run along the transom. All the stuff from the console came up through that. The trough should not have a hole to drain into the bilge. We have seen weird stuff done by owners though. I agree that with all the water that can stay in the trough, it can get kinda ugly in there. I removed the cover a couple times and pressure washed the trough and cables off/out.
