19-6 1974 Makeover

It's been a while since I posted anything, but since I'm very close to completion on a paint job, I figured I'd post pics of my progress.
A little history: I purchased this boat in 2007, filled in the transom, added a livewell/leaning post, and a few other things. In 2020, I removed every bit of hardware except for the bow and transom eyes. The motor has been hinging in a tree in the backyard since the day I started demo. Up until now, I've sanded the deck of the original diamond pattern, installed new deck access hatches, re-gelcoated the bottom black, primed the interior and exterior, sprayed the interior with Awlcraft 2000 in Whisper Gray, and that's where it sits. Waiting on a weather window in order to spray the hull in Awlcraft 2000 Shark Gray and then the non-skid (griptex, fine) in Whisper Gray. I rolled the black gelcoat and I've used the 3M Accuspary with a 2.0 cap for the primer and 1.2 cap for the Awlcraft 2000. So far, so good. And by the way, I've never sprayed any paint in my life. Not hard to do.
For the sanding and spraying, I needed an air compressor capable of supplying enough air, and I didn't want a permanent fixture in my garage, so I bought two 30 gallon Harbor Freight compressors and connected them in tandem. Not a single issue doing so. You'll read all over the internet that you must have (insrt blah blah blah), in order to use a DA sander or continuously spray paint. I'm here to tell you, it works just fine with the setup I have.
Once I learn how to post pics again, I'll post pics of the original boat, what I turned it into in 2009, and what I'm turning it into now.
I'm happy to answer questions.

Here's what it became back in 2010.

Here's some progress...well, I was going to post progress, but it seem way too difficult to post pics to this forum nowadays without editing each. You'll all have to take my word for it. Maybe I'll post a finished pic if I can take one that's thumbnail size.

Sounds like you've been busy. Follow the instructions here to post pics - no editing needed, the system will resize automatically, use your gallery. If you attach pics, then it gets complicated.

Looks good! I like the original touch. What do you have going on for a bracket with the closed transom?

For a bracket, I have a 6" setback and a 4" jack plate. Both are from Bob's. Back in 2009, when I originally put this boat together, I pretty much put it together with parts from craigslist. That's where the jack plate came from. it wasn't enough setback, so I went to Bob's and asked them if they thought a 6" setback bracket would work in tandem with the 4" jack plate. They said they'd never heard of anyone doing it and I may want to check the bolts periodically. Well, after 10 years of use, it held up great. So that's what's going back on it.

Here are some progress pics...
Before removing all the hardware:
Removing console:
Removing engine. Hung it from a tree (where it still sits, almost 2 years later):
Dirty Console:
Floor Jack to raise up off bunks. Used 4 4x4s to keep it in the air so I could sand and gelcoat the bottom.
I used a brushable gelcoat that I rolled (did not tip). Turned out great for my needs.

Filled in holes and cracks (after grinding them out with a dremel) on transom. And the sander I used sitting on the transom:
Interior sanded down. I removed the diamond pattern in the gelcoat using a random orbital sander from harbor freight. Lots of work:
Air Compressors I used to do the entire job (sanding, spraying primer and paint):
Sorry it's sideways. This is the awlgrip 545 primer I used and the 3M Accuspray gun with the 2.0 cap for spraying the primer.
Boat primed. Sanded it with 120 grit before priming:
Sanded with 220 after priming then filled the little pinholes and small cracks that showed up with 3M Acryl Glazing Putty:
Then sanded it all back down with 320 and painted the interior and gunwales where there would be the slick areas lining the nonskid (not sure what they're called).
I sprayed the interior with Awlcraft 2000 in Whisper Gray:

Spraying Awlcraft 2000 Whisper Gray on slick areas:
I then taped off the slick areas, sanded all the soon-to-be nonskid areas and then sprayed the nonskid. I used again, awlcraft 2000 in Whisper Gray and I used the fine Griptex. I'm very happy with it. You'll also see my ladder setup to allow access to the deck while spraying:
Here's my booth (don't hate):
Tape pulled and reinstalling things: I went with black rod holders, hatches, and trim this time. And I used almost all of the same hardware as I had on here originally. I saved it all in bags and labeled each. I only managed to lose and mix up a few:

What got me motivated to take on a new paint job was a guy on Youtube named Frankie Bushong. His channel is called: Boat painting & restoration with Frankie Bushong. He makes it look really easy. I took notes and followed his steps (almost to a T). Without his inspiration, my boat would still be pretty nasty looking.
Things to mention:
1. this stuff takes forever.
2. if you plan to tackle the task, just refer to #1.
3. I'm all in for about $4000. that includes the two air compressors, the Sander, the 3m Accuspray and all the PPS system and spray caps, the paint, the new hatches and hardware, and any sanding discs, tape, and anything else I used.
4. That may seem like a lot, but I actually have no idea what it would cost out in town. Keep in mind, I now have two new portable air compressors, a random orbital sander, a 3M Accuspray, and the knowledge to take on the task again someday.
5. Would I do this again? Yes, in a heartbeat. However, life got in the way a lot, I will finally be finished with my project in just under 2 years. Something to mention is that I didn't really get motivated and actually start working on it until about last November (2021).
I'm happy to answer any questions about my process. When I get more time, I'll list the exact steps for prep.

Nice Work! Great Job! I am doing almost this same thing (similar backyard temp setup too) with my 222 but with Gelcoat. I see empty box of baby wet wipes...That delayed me a few years as well. lol. I've watched a couple of Frankie's videos and enjoy them and his work. I now remember your boat on YouTube from a while back. I talked to someone because they wanted to close the transom without the cost of a Porta Bracket.

Looking great. I've seen some of Frankie's videos before. Good channel to learn a few things.
