Osprey 200 Newbie question about white navigation stern light
«

Just had a safety inspection and one item didn't pass, the white stern nav light.
I checked the bulb and the staff for continuity and they are fine.
I have no clue where the wiring runs in case I want to run some new wire.
I don't know if a fuse is an issue or which fuse would be the one.
Just bought the boat, a 1995, and the (re)wiring is amateur to say the least.
don't know where to go from here except run some new wire, but don't know where to run it :)
I could call a pro, but will first try a DIY.
Ideas appreciated.

Could be several things so...
First, I'm I right in assuming you have a switch at the helm that is labeled something like: Navigation/Anchor
Second, do the bow lights function?
Third, does the anchor light function?
The usual operation of the navigation /anchor light(s) is through either a double pole/double throw (DPDT) or a single pole/double throw (SPDT) with a diode switch that is wired to operate the nav lights (both bow and stern at the same time). The anchor light alone and of course in the off position nothing is lit. Most factory wiring follows this method so...
Assuming yours does too, if the bow lights function but not the stern the first question is does the anchor light function? if not then I would first look at the socket for your pole light. They live in a wet environment and are notorious for failure. I would start with those contacts.

You want the nav switch schematic (.pdf)
File is safe to download.
Good luck.

Thanks for the reply.
The Red/Green bow lights work fine. There IS a switch that says navigation lights. That turns on the Red/Green.
There is no anchor light, just the rear white. Maybe that is both?
I might try to trace the red/green and see where it goes.

Do you have a single pole light (white- all around/360) located on the starboard stern?
That's a very common style to meet Coast Guard regs for lighting. The pole light serves a dual purpose as a stern navigation light (when underway) and anchor light (at rest).
When functioning properly, it will always be lit (when switched to "nav" or "anchor").
A photo of the light and the switch would help.
Adding a pic is easy. Here's how.

Thanks again for the reply.
Yes, it is a 360 that functions as both. It's a standard Perko.
I have also thought about tracing the wires from the switch, the DPDT.
I just don't know where the wires are run, under the floor, the gunnels?
Also, it's a bit tight iunder the center console.

Totally agree with what bob said, those sockets are always a corrosion problem. Unscrew the fixture and lift it out maybe they left some length of wire to work on it or but connectors failed on it.

I first suspected the socket, but after checking it for continuity , it is fine. I checked the continuity from the socket feed wiring including the bulb.
Anyone know wheree the wiring runs, under the floor maybe??
