Looking on opinion on 1987 Sandpiper
« on: August 01, 2021, 09:05:31 AM »
Hello,

I am looking on opinion on 1987 Sandpiper. She was repowered in 1998, but transom looks reinforced/modified. Wonder if you can give me your opinion, as whenever transom has been moded it could be covering for an issue?
I'll post pictures so you can see what I am talking about.
Thanks.

Yes, the transom has been modded. They were wood and often started rot where there were penetrations. The lifting rings are known to suffer dry rot and you can see the plates used to re-enforce them. It's a CCP hull with the walk thr/bowrider cap and a neat moniker. Great hull and classic model. If the deck is not too soft and the price right, a new transom would add years to its life.

Good luck. :thumright:

Is that 1/4" aluminum across the whole aft and into the cockpit? I would bet it's covering something.
Is it possible that the original transom went straight across with no notch? See pic

Thank you for the replies Capt. Bob and RickK. Owner replied that the transom has been reinforced by previous owner, but he has no knowledge it it has been rebuild. Anyway he said that there are few other interested parties before me so it may be a while before I can schedule to see it.
