Striper 165 Rehab

There doesn't seem to be much info on the 165 so I"ll document my progress here. I purchased this boat from an estate sale . It has been sitting outside in the North Florida sun since '05. Buying a non runner can be a gamble, but I got it for what the trailer is almost worth. Pumped up the tires[dry rotted but held air] , got the foot out of the ground [ couldn't get the manual override to loosen but the trim worked once I hooked up a battery] and to a new home it went. I was able to get the seller to include a brand new spare for the trailer and the sale was only a few miles from my house. I have been passing this boat sitting in that yard for years, never seeing it move except for occasional lawn mowing, and had always thought about asking the owner about him selling. I made an offer at the sale and I was high "bidder". Here is what it looked like when I got it , and after the initial pressure washing. The old boat had enough mud dobber nests to start a garden.

You can see in the second picture that I started removing things . I’m going to seal all the holes from screws and bolts in the boat and removing the sea allowed me access under the center consul glad I took it out none of the screw holes were ever sealed there’s easy access to moisture in the deck everywhere

Yup that's the way most decks get ruined, holes not sealed.

Always thought these were cool boats, though I don’t see many at all up in Maine. I secretly have wanted to gut one, scrap the liner, and turn it into a flats skiff... Perfect lines for it.

Removed the railing and drilled out the holes, drilled out the holes in the deck, and prepped the holes with epoxy. Going to fill with thickened epoxy tomorrow.


I bought some Scotty rod holders to go where the outrigger holders were.
They were on clearance at West Marine. I could have gotten cheap Chinese chrome ones off Amazon, but went with good Canadian plastic.

This was my solution to the rotted out out rigger holders I think these were more intended for kayaks but I didn’t want to buy the Chinese junk or shell out big bucks for Perko these are made in Canada have used them on kayaksShould hold up OK for light  use

more....more..... lol i have the sister boat, Wellcraft 160CCF....replaced the windshield with a custom one (cheap out of maine) and rescently the Todd seat cushions from Defender....like you ive noticed not a TON of info but there are plenty still around....i use mine in RI water in Narragansett Bay and works perfect!!! replacing my helm and cable next. if you got some questions i might be able to help.!!!
