71’ Flatback 222 Build
« on: August 28, 2020, 12:36:37 AM »
Finally picked up a flatback on Sunday!!! This deal has been in the works since May and finally we were able to meet up. Previous owner made a sweet deal for me and was a smooth transaction (which is always nice). I could likely sell the motor and break even (purchased w/o trailer)  And have a decent leaning post to use on my 81’ while I do the build. Plan is simplicity, shallowest draft, maybe a top/tower maybe not.  Fishing boat; easy to tow, redfishing  inshore near crystal river/ grouper offshore on calm days, south Florida reef boat for lobstering/spear fishing/light tackle /dolphin on calm vacation/resort days in summer.

She is definitely severely waterlogged from age and being kept in the water.

My passion for the Classic 65-71 Flatback Aquasport 222 started back in 2016 but settled on an 81’ 222 in 2019, compromising on family/comfort with the semi vee 12 degree dead rise. Now that i have also acquired a 240 build (another post), I have what will work best for our style of fishing and leisure.

Looking forward to getting started on this one.

It is because of this site that this dream is slowly coming true, so thank you to all those who have shared their builds, tips, insights and future input.

Congrats on the new hull. She definitely has some growth on her under the motor.

Thanks Rickk.

Yeah that stuff is pretty nasty, and funky too. I took a pressure washer to it Sunday and it didn't want to budge. Its been sitting in the water for a few months after the PO got a new Sea Hunt that took its place on the lift. Ill have to get a scraper to it once i start pulling things apart and get the motor listed for sale.

Update: I ran across a better option for my “flatback build”....this 71’ flatback was sold to a lady out of Homosassa,Fl. It also turned out that she was friends with someone on here who did a complete rebuild. I was able to meet them as they helped with the move to the new owner. Hope to see the new owner post their rebuild on here. More on the other flatback in another post.
