Porpoising on a 222 rebuild
« on: July 03, 2020, 01:56:27 PM »
If anyone has any experience or information to help me with a porpoising issue. I have a 1972 222, just restored.
Closed transom, Armstrong bracket pushed motor aft 28". I haven't put my old trim tabs back on yet.

Motor is a 25", and it's probably 1 to 2" too low, but boat porpoises if not trimmed almost all the way down.

I moved fuel tank forward, console forward some, and have 2 batteries mid ship. I'm hoping a jack plate and trim tabs will solve this, but any information appreciated.

I added a 6 inch jack plate on my 18’ C-Hawk rebuild which moved my center of gravity aft. I had the same porpoising issue. I put Bennet trim tabs on and it rode perfect. Put your trim tabs on and you should be good to go.

Get the motor height issue sorted out first.  Then put the tabs back.  When it comes to tabs, bigger is better.  Twelve by twelves should be good for a 222.

I went through the same issues on my 200CCP rebuild.  It has a 30” Armstrong bracket.  Before raising my motor, I had porpoising and steering torque problems.   Raising my motor solved most problems.  Ice in the coffin box took care of the rest.  The tabs give me the ability to fine tune the ride while the motor is at an optimum angle.

yea, that sounds good. Maybe I should've gone with a 20" shaft, but I didn't. Jack plate and tabs!! thanks for comments.
