1973 19.6
« on: May 30, 2020, 05:27:09 PM »
I purchased this boat and have started its rebuild
After deck and gas tank removal I discovered the hull
Has a soft spot inside the stringer probably 1-2 ft section
The boat did sit out for a decade
Is this repairable?
I have already removed the transom
Thanks Jon

That's the beauty of fiberglass, it's all repairable ... I'm sure the more experienced guys on here will help.  Theres a wealth of knowledge available here by doing what you just did, ask.  I'm assuming the first reply (besides mine) will be for a picture.

Your stringer sounds like it has wet foam inside. You can remove a section on top and clean out the wet foam, re-fill and re-glass the section back in place.

As always:

yep.  What he said ^^^.  More than likely, stinger foam is toast, or rather soggy. Did it out!

1973 19.5 rotten core inner hull what should I do?
« Reply #4 on: June 01, 2020, 09:14:02 PM »
I am in the process of replacing the transom, deck, stringers. After removing the gas tank I found a large section of soft glass in between the stringers inner hull. I cut a small section of it out and found wet rotten wood. I am comfortable with all the listed repairs but I’m not sure how to recore the hull or if this boat is worth it. Anyone else come across this problem? I’m not sure of the severity or what it would take to fix this.
Any help is appreciated
Jon

Thanks for the replies
I’m not sure about the inner hull construction, will I  need to recore it?
Thanks

Photos would be great... are you saying there is a rotten wood (balsa?) core in the actual hull, and this is below or near the stringers?

I initially thought you were saying the stringer foam was soggy and I think others did too.

Recoring a hull is a decent project but not insurmountable.

Thanks Wingnut
Yes the inner hull is wet, I’m not sure how far it extends at this point
I’ll try to get some pictures
If I were to remove the stringers and grind through the layer of fiberglass I would have no core
just the Very  outer Hull-how do you remedy that?
This poor boat sat outside with no deck for the better part of a decade

It’s only a 6” strip of balsa down both sides of the center stringer, the rest of the hull isn’t cored.

Fishmore, I moved your pics into your personal gallery.  you can find it here http://www.classicaquasport.com/gallery/showgallery.php?cat=500&ppuser=134194

If you want to post a pic when you talk about your boat, which you should, follow the instructions here http://classicaquasport.com/smf/index.php?topic=12725.0  - don't attach them - you are limited by file size. Uploading them into your personal gallery is better for viewing.
Spend a few minutes to absorb the instructions. It's really easy. Remember if using a phone to take pics, to hold the phone horizontal with the lens to the left.

Like Mwar said, looks like it's just those two strips along the bottom that are cored. The rest of the hull should be solid glass. The stringers are also solid glass but they have a strip of wood in them, probably put there to help keep the shape when they are foamed. I pulled it out when I redid mine. Just make sure to brace the stringers well when you refoam so they don't warp.

Looks like this one may have been an inboard in a past life.

I am going to use this boat for River fishing and some inshore, I was curious as to what HP to power with. Since I'll be fishing the shallows in the Connecticut River I wanted to use a light motor that would get me 25-30mph
Any thoughts ?
Thanks

Do you want 25-30 at full rpm or at 4500? A 150 or 135 will give you a good cruise of 25-30 but still won't be maxed out.  You want to stay with a 2 stroke due to the weight if you can.
