1969 222 rebuild

Joining the gang finally! I have a 1969 222 that I’ve had for a long time but haven’t had the space or time to tackle... until now. The boat had no engine and the deck was unglassed plywood. Deck is ripped off and I’ve dug out foam. Today I finally freed the gunnel cap (probably a 3 person job) and now I can remove the liner and start some real work.
My overall plan is to do a full restoration (obviously) but go pretty work boat style on it. By work boat I don’t mean scruffy but just very ruggedly built and commercial grade. This boat will serve to run striper charters on. My goal is to remove all the stringers but the outermost one either side as both are dry and provide a good guide for the rest of the framing. The rest will be a grid system.
I will post some pics so you guys can have a laugh at how much work I just bit off solo, and with a 9 day old baby at home. Wish me luck and, as always, I love seeing the other builds on here!

nice! Hullsides and bottom appear to be in good condition. I removed my liner as I wanted to start fresh all the way around however, the other option is to keep it in with a small lip and use that for your deck to tab into. Looks like a good start.

Looks good! Great job on getting started. I think that’s the hardest part. Or at least it was for me. :) I haven’t done a build but they say to be careful with the sides when you remove the cap for the hull form. I guess you would be fine till you start adding glass. I’m sure someone else experienced can weigh in. I’ve seen 2x frames that restrict the hull from widening or shrinking?

Just some food for thought.

Pic of the logo. I know I should add a frame but my thought was with the cap going back on it should,with some persuasion, come back to its shape. I was going to add some framing as I start glassing up to make sure those wobbles aren’t permanent. And Ulysses I’m located in Massachusetts

Liner is out now and I’ll start grinding and glassing. I’m leaving g the outermost stringers in place, so I was going to reclassify the hull sides before I remove the rest of the middle three stringers. The outer 2 will also be my guide for the rest of the framing. I have so much respect for other builds now... pictures just can’t display the dirty work that goes into these projects. Make sure you take detailed measurements and make a drawing of the existing inside of the hull - you'll appreciate this later and it will help you plan.  Lay a 1x2 or 2x4 across the top of the hull sides and measure every 2 ft and document the height of the existing stringers from the 1x2 - every 2 feet. From the inside of the hull bottom, lay a level or piece of wood across the stringers and measure the height of the stringers on both sides of the stringer and document this on your drawing. Also measure the distance and height of the stringers at the top and bottom from one side of the hull side, again every 2 ft.
So now you have a detailed diagram of what the old looked like and will give you something to use to plan removal of the inner stringers and the impact.

After you make your changes, make sure you document with a new drawing and new measurements, just like the ones above. It'll help you in the future and also for resale. Once the floor is installed, you can't see through it - the detailed sheet will help you know exactly where everything is.

Remember that the original FBs had 70 or 90 hp engines and ran quite well.  Modern big engines will lure rebuilders to put a huge engine on the boat.  Our experience through many rebuilds is that a 150 2-stroker like Merc Opti or maybe the Rude is the perfect engine for the hull. A heavy 4 stroke is exactly that, heavy and changes the weight distribution. I have seen some guide boats with 150 Hondas but not sure if they compensated for the weight by moving things forward.
