going to the new york boat show in January and and was going to purchase a chartplotter/fishfinder for my 170, i use the boat for fishing mostly in long island sound with a max depth of 100'. any recommendations ?  is a 7" screen to big for this boat?

Get the specks on the combo unit you're interested in and cut a cardboard replica of it and set it on the console to see if you'll have any room left. I bought one that was taller than wide and fit it into the corner of the windshield.  Also make sure the unit has built in GPS antenna.  I bought a Garmin GPSMap 547xs (can't believe it's discontinued already  ) - it has a 5" screen and it's plenty big enough for a small boat.

Opinion alert- I don't believe it's a function of the size of your boat more than it's a function of your age and eyesight

I have a 7" SI unit on my kayak as well as  7" and 5" on my 17' Osprey ... it lets me see all the fish I can't catch 

Irrespective of size, get a colour unit. Good luck

I have the simrad Go7 on my 170 and love it. 7” screen. This is the best pic I have right now. Hope it helps.

I really like what u did with the teak. That's the one I have been looking at. I thing it looks good. I was afraid it was too big. Does it have blue tooth and built in radio/fm or is that only available on the higher priced model?

i find myself more and more using the split screen options on the fish finder, bigger is better. It's also nice while running to be able to easily see the charts.

A 7" screen seems like it would be about right on that boat.  But pay attention to resolution and how it looks in daylight.  I've seen some bigger screens that don't have the detail and view-ability of some smaller ones.  Also look a features - do you want side scan/imaging?  I use split-screen a lot on my Humminbird and use the side scan to look for structure around the boat - but it takes a special transducer and you pay for the added features. 

I think you have the right idea in going to a show so you can see a big selection, compare, and make an informed choice!

Boat = 7” is for sonar and 5” is for plotting - more convenient than split screen

Yak = 7” is Side Imaging capable but I generally bounce around the various views quite a bit

Haven’t noticed to be honest ... it came with the boat but is really a plan Delta for me ... both FFs have GPS so are primary tools, with phone being Plan Bravo (with Navionics etc), Plan Charlie is my backup handheld VHF with GPS functionality ... if I have to rely on the compass it’ll be because everything else is not working and hence probably not creating any interference .... good point though, thanks Rick

Very late to the party here.  But I run a Humminbird Helix 7 inch on my 175.  It's a perfect size.  SI/GPS model.  Note-I also fish in long island sound and the stock charts are useless you need to get the Navionics chip which is about $150-200 if I recall.  While I'm happy with the sonar reading, and really happy with the GPS and the controls on the unit, the side imaging really only works well on one side, the other side has a lot of interference from the engine.  I've moved it around a bunch of times with the same results basically.  Other friends with bigger boats have the same issue.  I'm mounted pretty close to the engine bracket.

Thanks everyone for the help. I'm defiinately going with a 7" screen and went this weekend and was playing with the garmin and the simrad go7. Really liked the garmin because it was much easier for me to navigate. I'm not to savvy with electronics. My son liked the simrad better lol. The simrad seemed to have a lot of things I'm not going to use like autopilot etc...  the boat show is next month so I still have time to research. I'll keep everyone posted
