Under Gunwale Rod Tubes

Hello all,

I am restoring a 1984  Osprey 196.and I have a question about the rod tubes under the gunwales.

Does anyone know how the ends of the tubes are dead ended?  I'm hoping it's a cap and not a rib.i don't want to try poking through until I have a good idea of what's in there.

These tubes are only  about 30" deep and that gives just over 7' for rod storage.  I would like to extend the tubes another 2 1/2' to accommodate my fly rods. There is room for the extension as long as I'm not structurally thawrted.

On my 200 CCP, the tubes were not capped, and the only thing that blocked them was flotation foam plus the fuel fill and vent hoses on the starboard side.

I might add that if you extend the tubes make sure you add foam tape (or a pool noodle) on the parts that will bang against the hull when under way.

Thank you for the response.  That's what I was hoping since the tube depth measures slightly different on each.
I'll try a probe and see what comes out.

Thank you for the response.  I'm not exactly sure what you mean.  Are you referring the to tube extensions and securing them?

I am referring, I think, to the same thing you are.  You have rod racks under the gunnel and the racks are too short so there are tubes in the front area that allow you to slide the tip in first and slide it in enough to be able to hang the rod on the rack. Now you want to extend the tube length so you can store your fly rods in the rack. Correct?
As you sit on the top of the gunwale and look forward, what is the shape of the hull and what does it do as it goes forward of the rod rack?
It curves left and right depending on the side of the boat you are on. If you stick a straight piece of PVC or some type of hard tube, it wants to stay straight, not curve.  So now you are making it curve and will use the hill to as the curving shape - correct?  What I am talking about is figure a way to secure the tube and even if you do secure it, cushion it so you don't hear it rattling against the hull sides.
Is this making sense now?

Gotcha.  Now I see what you are getting at.  I can hear and bend the PVC to the contour of the hull.  I have some experience doing that.

I'll have to figure a way to keep it from rattling. I'm thinking maybe foam like is scattered around the of the hull.

I think PVC might be too heavy - you can buy light weight tubes - google it.

I've seen some boroscopes available in Amazon.  May have to invest in one.
