repowering my osprey 200
« on: May 14, 2019, 09:17:00 PM »
I am looking into repowering my 1989 osprey 200 was thinking an etec I have mercy 115 tower of power I would like to put a 150 on back  was wondering if anyone has done this. The 150 etc weighs 418 which is about the  20 pounds more than a 175 hp from 1989. Was just wondering if anyone had put a etec 150 on the back of there boat

I have a different hull but I repowered with an Etec.  Love it.  Super quiet.  Sips the fuel, uses very little oil, no smoke, instantly starts.  tons of torque.  Others on here have repowered with Etecs and I think you will find they all are very happy with them.  The 20lbs is not much to worry about and can be easily made up for by moving some weight around up under the console.   If your electronics are N2K make sure you get the cable to tie the Etec into the N2K network or get the I-command gauge.

I raised the floor in my 200 osprey 4 inches closed the transom and hung a zuke 150. If I hadn't closed the transom there would have been some serious swamping issues. Go lighter with a 135 merc or etec could be an option as well. Cant remember exact weight on the zuke 150 but it is on the heavier side for the boat

yeah the four strokes are heavy for these boats.  Remember the basic design goes way back and they originally had 75-100 hp on them.  One member had a 90hp Tohotsu on his 19'6 and it pushed it ok.  He repowered with a 115 Etec I think. Gobs more power and he loved it.  The Merc 150 four stroke is probably the lightest four stroke.  Blue Agave has one on his 19-6 but his boat is heavily modified.  Maybe 20 pounds heavier than his old two stroke 200 merc.  on my 245 Explorer I went from a 225 Johnson V6 to the 250 Etec with very little weight change....
