Inner liner question
« on: October 07, 2018, 05:09:02 PM »
Do you need the inner liner (or some call it inner hull)on Aquasports or can you beef up the hull sides with layers of glass?

The hullside liner is really there to hide the unfinished glass. On my little 170 the liner also help stiffen the cap. Some of the early 222 had a free standing cap with a liner that laid on the inside of the hull side.
See Mshugg's rebuild to see what he did on his. https://classicaquasport.com/smf/index.php?topic=13659.msg136714#msg136714

. . . or can you beef up the hull sides with layers of glass?

Adding layers of glass to the sides offers benefits, but it doesn't do much to add stiffness. One or two layers will increase puncture resistance, reenforce compromised glass and provide an easier to finish surface.  It would take many additional layers to really increase stiffness, and all those layers add weight.  imagine glueing sheets of paper together.  Two sheets glued together (a 100% increase in thickness and weight) adds little stiffness.  The paper needs to approach the thickness of cardboard before it becomes significantly stiffer.

Adding a core or stiffeners does much more without adding weight. The stiffeners on my CCP may be a bit of overkill, but they added significant stiffness with less weight.

Thanks for your reply mshugg. My plan is to add quite a few stiffeners if I decide to get rid of the liner. Which as of now that's my plan.
