1970 19-1 Rebuild

Hello everyone,
Just getting started on rebuilding a 1970-19-1 and wanted to share where I'm at in the process and share some pictures and the vision I'm starting out with for this project. I'm sure I will change my mind as I progress many times, as I already have so far. I'm starting with the boat as I brought it home the first day before cleaning it
Before cleaning
Next will be cleaning and then removing everything that can be unbolted, the deck is soft in many places and the transom needs work as well
As I start cleaning
Removing all that I can to get a clean slate
The transom that needs to be redone, as I removed the 20 some odd screws that have been put in and not sealed properly over the last 48 years water began to drip out of most of them.

Here's the console, my plan is to remove the seat portion so I can use the added space to put a cooler in the front to use as a seat. I also plan on raising the top a foot plus it's way to low for me to operate standing up comfortably. also re glassing the top and replacing the core for new gauges steering and electronics. Originally the fuel tank was in the console, I plan on putting it below deck while I'm redoing it.
Just realized I could modify and add to a post.
Here is where I'm at now, marked out where i was planning to cut after I changed my mind 5 times. So far started with the casting deck before it started raining here all weekend.
Hopefully I can get the deck out tonight or tomorrow and get to the transom after that

You are doing the opposite of what I did. Here is what a cooler looks like in front of my old console - you're cutting yours more straight down
I added a "seat" to my design to add a space for my batteries (1 starting and 2 trolling) - my batteries used to be in the aft at the transom.
So now I have weight moved a little forward and a place to store them, which I didn't have before.
So just the opposite of what you're planning.

your console came out sweet, I like it way better than my idea. The only reason I cutting mine down is to get more space up front, I can always move the cooler onto the casting deck to get more walking and fishing room. I also plan on making the casting deck about 2 feet shorter and getting rid of the front ice chest or what ever its called to make that whole front area dry storage. Just need to figure out how to make it look good and blend in the inner shell to the floor where I'm making the casting deck shorter.
Here's where I'm at now, got the deck out last night and exposed the transom.
Looks like a good spot for a fuel tank
Cleaned it up, I dont know what wasn't living in there, found 1 live tree frog, a couple of dead mice a lot of acorns and lots of poop. I dont know if the foam in the end compartment was original, the PO had cut a hole in the deck just above it and put the plug back in the hole. I do know the foam was soaked and weighed a ton.
Also does anyone know what was used to set the deck in, it has a cement like consistancy?
Lifted the gunnel caps and cut the liner back 18 inches to get ready to cut the transom wood out
Now I need to cut the stringers back and start digging.

The original fuel tank was inside the console and the boat was designed for its COG from that. My recommendation is that you figure out a forward place for the tank (pretty easy since you can put a belly tank anywhere at this stage).
I didn't see where you mentioned your plan on the style transom you're going with. That should help with the help we can provide.

I'm planning on either raising it to 25 inches or going full and notching it to 25" and using marine plywood. Originally I was planning on saving the deck and replacing the wood so I could use the cable channel but I think I'm just going to build a complete new deck from bow to stern and make a casting deck 3 feet shorter than original. Guess Ill figure out how to run PVC underneath for cables and fuel. Also leaning towards building my own console instead of modifying the one I have, lurking around the site looking for others that did.

We have plenty of examples for ya to browse through. If the console works for you but is too wide, cut 6" out of the middle front to back and fiberglass it back together.

When it comes to the transom, you’re probably best off minimizing the size of the cutout. Early boats had a wide transom cutout, with a knot has in the center to accommodate either single or twin outboards. Twins on a small boat are a vestige from back in the day when every trip began with a prayer that the outboard would start. Modern outboards are much more reliable, so no one is putting twins on a 19. Definitely raise the transom to full height, then figure out the minimum notch that will accommodate your outboard and steering ram.
If you pour through the rebuild threads, you’ll get lot's of ideas for your rigging chase. Don’t limit yourself to 191 rebuilds. There are so many cool ideas, spread across all models. There are probably more 170/175, 196/200 and 222 Osprey rebuilds than all other models put together.
As for the console, Rick is right. It’s not difficult to cut up and modify a console. I started out that way on my CCP, but switched to building from scratch. In the end, it depends on your tolerance for pain and level of obsession.

Thanks guys, been grinding and cutting like mad tonight trying to get the stringers back 18 inches to remove and replace the transom. Itchy as heck after a shower and jump in the pool. My plan for the transom is to bring it to 25 inches, open for other ideas but my heart is set on a new 90hp etec when I'm done. As far as the console, I'm 6'4" so I want it higher not narrower so I'll deal with that somehow. New consoles are pretty pricey for what I want so I'm either going to modify or build one from scratch, either way I absolutely have the chops to see it to the end. Also I have been looking at many rebuilds on this site flip flopping all over getting every idea I possibly can. This site Is Awesome,
Thank You All

Is the etec not available in a 20"?
The cool thing about fiberglass is you can do most anything you want with it - so if you want a taller, narrower console, cut and fill is easy.

It is available in a 20'' but I feel much safer with a higher transom, my previous boats had low transoms and always had water come in over the top until i made modifications to add starboard or poly shields that i bolted in to raise the height on the sides of the motor wasn't the prettiest but did the job. After that they were way drier boats, especially with large boats with large wakes passing by frequently where i fish . This is my chance to get what I want from the start, since the only difference is how I cut the plywood and a little extra glass work.

I understand. With big waves it is a little scary coming over the aft if the wave period is off - my boat "notch" is only 8" out of the water at rest. Another thing to think about is that usually these boats are self bailing with a light motor on them, like an old Merc straight 6 90, but add the weight increase of the newer motors, the scuppers in the aft let in water either at rest with nobody in the boat or when you walk to the rear. I don't know the difference in weight between the 20 and 25" shaft but raising the transom without raising the scuppers is futile. Just thinking aloud.

When I redo the deck Its going to be with 3/4 inch, level from bow to stern eliminating the cable trough and the pocket drain area where the scuppers drained through making them about 4 inches higher. Also looking at putting in a 30 gal tank forward of where the console was under the deck to move the weight forward

Cut the stringers out to 18" from the transom, foam is all soaked, not a real surprise. Got a little more glass to get off the transom then I'll be able to tear it out and clean it all up.
Don't know what the deal with the tube is, water was trapped in that area and had no way to escape, that's the compartment that was filled with foam that was saturated.
