196 delamination issues?
« on: June 08, 2018, 11:06:14 PM »
I have a 1986 196. Over the past 2 years of owning it I’ve notices spider cracks forming all over the hull. Under the hull I’ve already had the one side a small crack patched along the spray rail now on the other side of the boat the same issue is happening. I have pictures I’ll try to attach is my boat having issues from water being trapped? I lift the front as high as I can in the front but it rains quite a bit in Florida so water is bound to be trapped. Not sure if it’s worth fixing or time to get rid of it

Follow the instructions in this link to post pix.  I wouldn't attach, upload them instead

Definitely, get some pictures up.  Spider cracking does not necessarily mean delamination.  It depends on location and severity of cracks.  Most boats experience spider cracking as they age.  The problem is that gel coat is relatively brittle compared to to the underlying glass.

From what I’m seeing in the pictures, the cracks along the chine don’t look too bad.  Most likely just a gel coat repair.  It looks like you have the boat on a roller trailer.  It would be worth double checking that the hull is well supported when on the trailer.  Rollers are pickier than bunks.

As far as the floor I’m not sure if it’s a gel crack issue or the fact the previous owner painted the whole floor and interior a bright white. When I first got the boat 2 years ago it looked in good shape after 2 years the small cracks have shown up on top and under the hull.. no soft spots on the floor besides the cracks it’s solid

As far as the paint used I’m not sure what brand or type was used I assumed it was sprayed the right way. What you think guys any insight? As far as the trailer I have bunks on the rear of the trailer and in the front center I have the 3 roll on as pictured which needs to be replaced as well. Had a baby a year ago and have another on the way the boat had kind of got pushed aside the past year and a half.

Speed, I think you'll not know the extent of the damage unless you sand or sandblast all the paint off.  As for the pics you're uploading, please upload them to your member gallery, not in the folders that we keep the catalogs and such.  I'll move them and hopefully not break your links.

Okay yeah I’m figure the floor is due to the pain peeling/cracking. The cracks under the boat I’m worried the stringers popped or some kind of issue

Are there any soft spots in the floor? One thing is sure, if you remove the floor, you'll be able to inspect the stringers.  Lots of examples and help here on the forum.
