Got my 170 yesterday!

Well, I'm happy to report that I finally became 170 owner yesterday.  Some of you know I've been looking for a project for quite some time now (and trying to convice the wife to let me have one).  Well, after a '73 Mako 17 slipped through my fingers a few weeks ago, I ran across this one that billh1963 had pointed out on the Classified forum.   After speaking with the owner a few times, I arranged to pick it up (pretty much sight unseen) yesterday.  So, I Left the house at 4:15 AM and headed for Cary, NC.







The trip home was uneventful.  Just the way I like it.  :)

She needs quite a bit of work (transom, floor, etc).....and I'm really looking forward to it.  Started cleaning out my basement this morning so I have a place to store all the stuff that needs to come off prior to the demo phase.  []

Congrats on the "new" boat and project.  I am sitting here right now wanting to lay the glass on the new floor in my project but the weather is a bit iffy.  Been a LONG time going on this one but the end is sort of in sight!  Good luck with yours.

Congratulations, and welcome to the fleet!

You'll enjoy the 170.  Handles well, easy one man launch/retrieve and a manageable size for projects.  I remember that boat from the Craigslist ad Billh1963 posted.  Looked to be well cared for.  Being a '75 boat, it's well built and with the 60 on the back should run at 28-30 mph. The ad said the carb needed to be replaced but you may find all it needs is a good rebuild.  Anyway, that's all in the future... important thing is that it's in your yard safe & sound.

Geez, I just figured something out.  The boat I just bought in NC, was 5 miles from my house back in May.

That's weird how things come about.

I've seen it up close as it is/was sitting just a few miles from my house. It's a total wreck...that I wanted to buy anyway. I set my limit at $500 and the guy told me immediately he wanted $800. The transom is completely shot. The floor is toast. The console needs to be replaced. The entire boat is covered with gelcoat cracks. It's a MAJOR, MAJOR project.

Same boat?  Did they replace the transom and floor?

Congrats on the boat. Great boat, you will have a great time with her. Seeing that 17 makes me miss mine. Had some great times with it.

Yep, same boat.  Whomever bought it replaced the seat with the Todd unit, removed the blown Merc, installed the Evinrude, painted the floor and sold it to the guys I just bought it from.  They then had to replace the axle, hubs and springs on the trailer...

So, did they do any rebuild on it or just cover it up? Based on your previous observations of the boats condition, was the transom redone or do you still have to do that?

I dont' think they even tried to cover anything up.  The paint appeared to be for cosmetic reasons.  She still needs everything rebuilt.

I didn't figure out it was the same boat until after I got it home.  Then everything just fell into place.
