Battery power

AS Osprey 200, powered by 1995 Mariner 150.  Battery in the boat is a Durmax group 29.  The battery is a combo starting/deep cycle. There are no big power draws but for the motor tilt; no plans to leave the anchor light on all night.   Do I need that much/type of battery power or will a group 27 work for me?  Thanks in advance for your wisdom.

I would bet a new 27 would work. The difference being both the amount of reserve and actual size.

Still, this is one area of the boat where I feel bigger is better. Having a little extra cranking power never hurts.

I'd rather have a pair of group 24s than a single 29. 27 is more than enough battery.

BTW that Mariner can be rope started in a pinch. I'd suggest you try practicing it.

Wing - you ever tried to rope start a V-6?  I have an it's a bear!  Can it be done?  Yes.  Do I want to ever have to do it?  NOOOOOO!

But if you ever find yourself in that position, hope that you have an extra pair of hands on board.

While it would be great to have a power lifter fishing buddy(to do the pulling) at that moment, anyone that can turn the key switch will do.

Turning the switch to "start" while simultaneously pulling the rope will make life just a little easier. You would be surprised how fast a "dead battery" can turn a motor once you break its inertia.

Thanks for your help, everyone.  I put a tester on the battery this evening after work, and it tested ok. The needle stayed in the green. Did start the engine for the first time yesterday, and it purred--it just didn't emit water as it should.
The boat goes for a new impeller kit, lower unit lube, etc. Tuesday.  I am grateful to be able to work at Hamilton Marine, Searsport, ME. to support this foolish habit.  But with that impeller adventure, and the battery use involved, that will be a sufficient test.  And I know where I can get a good battery.  I think I might not buy any starting cord, though.
