Thanks for your help, everyone. I put a tester on the battery this evening after work, and it tested ok. The needle stayed in the green. Did start the engine for the first time yesterday, and it purred--it just didn't emit water as it should.
The boat goes for a new impeller kit, lower unit lube, etc. Tuesday. I am grateful to be able to work at Hamilton Marine, Searsport, ME. to support this foolish habit. But with that impeller adventure, and the battery use involved, that will be a sufficient test. And I know where I can get a good battery. I think I might not buy any starting cord, though.
