Livewell pump for 98 Osprey175
« on: April 25, 2018, 08:45:27 PM »
OK, this is my 1st post with a pic so feel free to school me if required.
I'm looking to put a livewell pump in my new (to me) boat.  1998 Osprey 175.
Hopefully you will see the present situation in the pics.
Shown is 1) the intake in bottom of hull 2) shutoff valve which is still working 3) what is left under the C.C.  The drain line looks to be fine.
Reading some of the other related posts I see that the Shurflo Baitmaster 2 is a popular choice but given all the other unexpected projects on this boat I can't drop $200-ish.
The livewell will not be used much but when the right situation presents itself I want it to function.
The tank is relatively small so I shouldn't need massive GPM capability but the pump will be above the waterline and needs to be able to self prime (likely with an inline strainer).
Any chance I can get away with something much cheaper like this?

As far as what size pump, the general rule of thumb is to have the livewell water exchanged every 10 minutes, or 6x/hour.  Let's say you've got a 30g well...6 x 30 = 180.  So the minimum pump size you'd want is a 180gph pump.  However, if you reside in a warm climate with warm water, like say west coast of FL, you'll want a pump with twice the gph capacity.  Bait in summer months need freshly circulated water due to the water temp.

Assuming all of your thru hull components do not need replacing, the other part I'd add is a high speed pickup, which also aids with priming.  They ain't cheap, but if you look around in marine surplus stores you'll definitely find a used one.  High speed pickup example is linked below.

Reviving this thread from the dead.  I'm curious how the 175s are plumbed.  I have one, with  livewell built into the console, but no plumbing for it.

In the picture #3, it appears as though there is a drain line or fill line that comes from below deck, under the console.

Does it run above the gas tank?  And eventually run out the stern of the tank coffin, into the bilge?  I can't tell from the picture, but it appears the thru hull pickup is in one of the corners of the hull, whereas mine (1989) is close to the keel.

Just curious how these were setup.  I'm surprised a line with raw water would be routed over the gas tank.

Most that I've seen on a 175 were a recirculating setup, no raw water setup unless someone plumbed it themselves. They had a drain that dumped it on the deck. If you look at the one above, that was the original recirc setup. So this is someone's attempt at something.
Usually you see 700 gph pumps used for livewell operation and the pumps are attached to the shutoff valve. I agree that a high speed pickup should be part of the equation. If you can snake a hose from the bilge over the tank and through a hole you cut that would work for the intake but you wouldn't want to run the exhaust into the bilge. So the only thing to think through is how you're going to rid the well of the old water. Getting a hose plumbed port or starboard to the hull side is not very easy without access plates being cut into the floor and/or liner on the sides.
Capt. Bob has an above deck baitwell on his boat - hopefully he'll pipe up(pun intended) in here soon and explain how he did his.

The thru hull with valve setup is your livewell intake, only there isn’t a pickup mounted to the underside of the hull.  Where the original livewell outflow hose exited the hull is unknown.  But for certain the outflow connection at the livewell is not one of the 2 connections pictured in #3.  You wouldn’t have the tank outflow next to the inflow....the outflow is at the top of tank to allow for passive flow.

Likely previous owner used tank w/valve open as a passive livewell....tho w/o a pump feeding water into tank the water level would be very low, considering tank is mounted above water line.

Got it, thanks for the responses fellas.  I was asking out of curiosity, I actually just cut out my livewell fore of the helm, I think it's an impractical  location for a number of reasons such as the ones you just mentioned.  Cutting out the rounded well opened up a lot of space for storage which I used for trolling motor batteries (will  post pictures later).

I'm actually likely going to build a livewell like boatnamesue did, in the stern against the transom.  I'm also considering using the stern hatch itself as a livewell.  It's fairly deep, about 30 inches I'd say, and somewhat rounded.  And location  makes it perfect to neatly plumb to my raw water intake, and built an overflow drain hose.  Pictures to come, some may find it  interesting.

Clearly I'm getting way too bored being fishing season is over here in the northeast...

We have one member that added a small swim platform to the starboard side of his transom on his 175 and installed a maybe a 15 gal baitwell on the small platform.
