Yamaha LF 115 on 1978 22'2 center console

Hi, I'm new here and considering on purchasing a 1978 222 center console aqua. My concern is the motor on it, its a 2016 Yamaha 115xa. It has less than 100 miles on it, Is this a strong enough motor for this boat? Thanks or the help. Also any other concerns with that hull or motor I should be aware of? Thank you very much!

My 1970 222 has a 115 on it and I really enjoy it. Good cruising speed and fuel efficient. These boats are weight sensitive in the stern and don’t need a ton of power to get moving.

Erick, the boat you're looking at is a 12 degree deadrise hull vs what Chris has is Flatback.  The 12 degree may not even get up on plane with a 115 on it, whereas Chris's model was designed for a 70hp and doesn't really "get up" on plane.

The 22 foot Osprey does pretty well with 150-200, but you've got to be careful withe weight.  A 22 foot Osprey with a lighter 150 will handle better than one with a heavy 200.  You really don't want a 600 lb engine hanging on the transom of that boat!   

There are some nice, 4 cylinder 150 engines out there now that are light, fuel efficient, and would fit a 222 Osprey well.  Mercury and Suzuki both have some nice, 4-stroke 150s that weigh about what the boat was originally designed to handle.  Mercury's new 4-stroke 150 weighs 450 lbs, and the 4-stroke Suzuki DF150 comes in at 470 lbs.   Both the Merc and the Zuki are big (2.8L-3.0L), large-bore inline 4 cylinder blocks.  Good torque and fuel economy.   

Or go with a 2-stroke - the Merc ProXS 150 is 430 lbs and would be a great fit for your boat with a proven 2.5L engine.  The  2.6L Etec 150 would also be a very good choice at 420 lbs.  Both the Merc and the Etec are V-6 engines and have great torque, acceleration, and overall performance for their weight. 

One more thing - Mercury is currently throwing in a full 5 year warranty on new motors to sweeten the pot a bit...  Suzuki has a 3-year warranty, but some dealers will throw in the extra 3 year extended warranty for free if they need to sell a motor.   

If you had a 222CCP my advice might be different - I would suggest you put a second Yammie 115 on the back.     But not on an Osprey.

Depending on how concerned you are about weight, you may want to double check specs on The Suzuki.  It seams to have gained weight.  They now list the weight for the 25” 150 at 522 lbs.  The good news is the 200 only weighs 7 lbs more at 529.  The bad news is it’s over 50 lbs heavier than the merc.

When I first contemplated power for my 200 CCP rebuild I was thinking Suzuki 175 or 200.  Now I’m leaning toward the 150 Merc for the lightest weight.  I went full transom with a bracket, so my motor will hang further aft.  Your 222 should be fine either way.  Might be worth waiting for the new Merc V6 if you want 200 hp.

Couldn't agree more with Rick ^^^^.   Not because I have a 22-2, but because I have a 115hp hung on my 170.  The dry weight of the 22-2 is roughly 600lbs more than the 170, then add the additional weight of fuel its tank capacity holds verse the 170.  Stating a 115hp hung on the 22-2 is underpowered would be an understatement.

FWIW I have a Yamaha F150 on my 1981 222 CCP and it's just fine from a power viewpoint. Though I did move my batteries forward to under the centre console.

I just repowered my 22-2CCP and went with the 200 Optimax - 3.0L.  Great results, quiet, fast, and pulls like a bankrupt dentist!  The Smartcraft gauges are great and make rigging easy.  The weight was not an issue, but I moved the batteries up under the console anyway.  Batteries in the spashwell just never did make sense to me...

Right now I'm looking at buying a 222 from the 1970s or 80s (the current owner isn't sure) that has a Yamaha 115 four-stroke, and after reading this thread I'm wondering if it's going to be underpowered, which it sounds like depends on whether it's a flatback or a a 12 degree deadrise hull.

What do I look at to figure out if the boat is a flatback or the 12 degree deadrise?

The transom was professionally replaced a couple years ago, so I'm guessing it doesn't have the HIN that would tell me the year.

Probably a pretty basic question, but I'm new at this! Thanks.
