Hello everyone. I've owned this boat for a few years and love the way she rides, so finally made the decision to start a rebuild. I don't plan to restore the whole boat at the same time, but rather take it piece-by-piece beginning with the transom. I'm definitely new to this, so any and all criticism and/or recommendations are greatly appreciated.
I'm using this boat as a learning tool in order to gain the experience necessary to do a yacht-quality rebuild of a 22-2. Hope she floats when I'm done!
She sat real nice previously, hope to keep it that way as the build progresses
Began by de-rigging...If anyone needs a great running Yamaha 115 with all cables and controls let me know, I'll sell it cheap!
Found a real nice 1/2 tower that will be going in. Plan to modify the existing console to fit the tower.
Here I began to cut away the deck...
And then the stringers...Very surprised to find the foam was super dry.
And finally the inside skin and transom cap. The wood core was about 1/2 solid and 1/2 soggy.
I'm a dentist and I've been looking at this project the same way I restore teeth...Remove the decay and replace with sealed materials that are resistant to further decay.
Used a hammer, crowbar, wide chisel and Bosch Bulldog Rotary Hammer with chisel attachment to remove the wood core from the outside skin. Not a fun job, but not as bad as expected with the rotary hammer. Finally used the grinder with sander attachment and 36 grit to clean everything up.
So this is where I am now. Although Ive cut back the liner on the inside of the hull about 12'' and cleaned everything up with the grinder a bit.
My tentative plan is to lay up a new inside skin, reinforce the outside skin and pour a full transom with Arjay Ceramic Pourable Compound. All criticism and recommendations are much appreciated!
