latch ideas for 87 170
« on: July 26, 2017, 10:22:34 PM »
I have just a web strap with a snap holding my anchor hatch at the bow. It is a fiberglass door with about a 1" finger hole in it. It hinges at the bottom and just rests on the bow when open. I would like to put a latch of some sort to hold it closed. The web strap has seen better days and its time to change to something new. What do you guys with 170's use to keep that hatch shut? I'm looking for ideas/suggestions

My 86 170 had the same anchor hatch but it was held closed with something like this.

Worked great for awhile but as time rolled on, it would pop open when you hit hard while running.

This was FOB back then for Aquasport.

My 1987 170 has the round rigid velcro type thing Capt Bob mentions.  Same deal it seems to hold good until I get into some rough stuff, then I pops open and the door makes a heck of a racket.  I 'm thinking the web strap was something a PO added.  Go to flounder pounder marine or similar website and look for cabinet latches etc.

My 1986 170 had something like this http://www.iboats.com/Chrome-Plated-Elbow-Catch-Perko/dm/view_id.238063?mkwid=sF8mIEKtp&crid=41829038899&mp_kw=&mp_mt=&pdv=t&cm_mmc=Google_Main-_-Mall+New+Shopping%3AGoogle-_-All+Products%3AMall+New+Shopping%3AGoogle-_-PLAs&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI7IzGkomq1QIVixbTCh325ANgEAkYASABEgLQO_D_BwE

You reach your finger through the hole to trip it.  My recollection is that it was chrome on sink, but when it failed, I replaced it with chrome on brass or SS

I have purchased this exact elbow latch but for the life of me cant figure how to make it work on the door configuration. Does the latch go inside the compartment and the catch go on the door? Do you happen to have a pic of it?

Unfortunately I sold my 170 years ago.

The latch is mounted to the back of the door with the dinosaur he'd looking end pointing up toward the edge.  The catch mounts on the inside edge of the frame.  You will probably need spacers either on the back of the door or an the frame to get the spacing to work.

Those Perko elbow catches that mshugg suggested, work very well.  I have used them on several boats.  Mount them so that your finger hits them naturally when you put it in the hole to pull the hatch open.  You might need to sand off the inside corner of the hole a little.  Many of them were a bit sharp from the factory.  I've cut a finger more than once on a couple of them.
